Good bass amp for recording?

I mentioned this in my last few posts, but try the TSE Bass Overdrive plugin. It simulates the Sansamp. That can just be a temporary thing though.

I feel like a direct bass is the bass equivalent of an acoustic piezo p'up. Too round with too much 'tink' to the tone.

A bit too overgeneralized for me to agree. As you must know, basses and their pickups vary widely, and what you plug them into also makes a huge difference. There isn't "a" bass DI sound, there are many bass DI sounds.

When I do bass gigs with supplied PAs I never let the soundmen run a direct box to the bass ....... I want either a mic or a send from my amp so I have control over the EQ'ing and such.

There really isn't much of an upside to constraining the sound guy's options. If he's good let him do his thing. If he sucks he'll make your bass sound like crap however it's connected. Stage isn't the place from which to judge house sound.

In a large venue I can see asking for a mic in addition to a DI. They'll probably have the channels and be glad to have some tonal options.

In a small venue everybody is hearing your amp regardless, so why bother with a mic? A direct gives the sound guy some supplemental tone in case the bass needs reinforcing.

You know, it's a funny thing but I think that as far as recording goes, the recorder one is recording into might also make a difference. Whenever I have tried to go direct with the bass into my Tascam 488, it sounds so shitty, no matter what I do. No 'BOOOF' or 'POW !', just a fluffy 'ploom'. But going direct into my Akai DPS12i is a different story. Much tougher, nicer sound. Though I prefer the amp (and combinations of the two), the direct sound isn't bad.

Or you could just plug your bass directly into the instrument input on your $1,500 Grace Preamp.

No need for a DI box at all...

Would any of the advice regarding DI on this thread change if you knew Chadivision had a Grace Preamp?

Since Chadivision didn't tell us what he has, anything regarding DI is just a bunch of people talking out their asses.

Chadivision, we really need to know something about what recording gear you have if anyone is to give you any good advice.

Chadivision, micing a bass amp might be the best approach, but it also may well not be. And while, if you decide to skip the amp, you may need a DI box or you also may well not need one. If your interface or preamp has an instrument input, why don't you just try recording a few bass parts through the instrument input and then play with it using whatever amp sims came with your DAW (or whatever you can download as a demo or for free).

Can't really win with you can anyone ? A little bit of friendly banter and we're 'putting off people that come to this site looking for advice but getting 5 pages of inane rubbish and in jokes'. Try to advise someone who is looking for direction with his bass sound and suggest alternatives and we're just people 'talking out of their asses'.
There are some of us that don't lose 'no win' situations......
