I feel bad cos you seem like a nice chap.

The hair and shirt stuff is just a reaction to someone coming on to a BBS for home recordists and advertising your (high end sounding?) services. I take the point that you meant no harm and i apologise for being a bit rude. Weclome to HR.

Son of Mixerman, 16 track demos can sound BETTER than stuff done on an SSL G (never liked the G eq's m'self) if they are recorded fully. And cheap mics can be more appropriate than expensive ones. I have used SM58's for studio vocals (even for Al Jarreau). Certain cheesy mics will have a cooler trashy sound than the pricey stuff...if that's what you are going for.

However, if you are going for clarity and depth you should try to get (even rent) a decent mic and mic pre, then send the signal into whatever you are recording to as cleanly as possible. Add compression or effects only if you need to, bearing in mind you can add more later. Try to both capture and preserve the dynamics of what you are recording.

Hey, I usually bypassed the SSL and send the mic > mic pre > directly into the tape machine. Less is more. I see no reason why you cannot do the same with lower budget equipment.

Besides, if you are more comfortable playing in the Garage (and who isn't), then of course you will get much better/cooler tracks there than in a room with a clock over your shoulder.

More opinions & tips at my site at http://BruceAMiller.us

Your site is down at the moment Bruce. Thanks for joggen my knoggen on by passing the mixer pre's. I guess the 16 tracks isn't really the issue, its more the consoles in my budget do not provide routing to my tastes. I like the garage because it keeps me close to my family and I needed a place to work "off" the clock so to speak.

Good to have to here Bruce. How did you get started in the business?

Point well taken, did not mean harm. I will continue to contribute with any answers I can here.

...and I guess it is time to ditch the shirt.

Hrmmm... you know... I think I have a better suggestion for you.

Based on the fact that many many of us are trying to learn to track and mix properly, why not offer to mentor some of us... instead of charging $30-$80/hr for us to record, why not ask $10-15/hr to let some of us "sit in" on a recording session and learn from watching you?

You could talk us through what you're doing on the board and why... point out little things that we might otherwise not notice. etc...

Something to think about ...

P.S.: Next time... serve my Spam green... with eggs.... I like Green Eggs & Spam! hehehe

you dont like spam burgers? what about spam and mac and cheese....can i get some red kool-aid with that?

I am a bit sensitive to spam on this site (and any other site) as well. However, you handled yourself well, Bruce.

If you are true to your word, and wish to contribute and share, you are more than welcome in my book. I believe I can learn things from just about anyone, but you sound like you might know more than the average bear.

Chess gave you good advice. Once people can see that you know what you are talking about, the rest should follow.

Having read the tips on your site I reckon your advice here would be very well received.

And since you worked on the Doves album I'll listen to anything you say and I'll take copious notes. :)

Bruce has a great CV with a lot of great artists, we have gotten to work with a few of the same folks, but he got to work with Klaus Nomi!! and that way cool.

There is some good info his site. Its a good read

This is almost Spam , but its relavent. My other business, in addition to producing and mixing is running a small short term recording school that does just this. It teaches small groups of home recordings to make kick ass recordings in their own studios. http://www.homerecordingbootcamp.com

OK, this spam is now over!
