i remember someone talking about you get the modern pop vocal sound by doing something with doubling the tracks and compressing... and some kind of EQ but i dont remember what it was.

Yea. That's exactly how you do it.

i was hoping for a more specific recomendation or place to start.

and no. i do not expect to have a 'bigger than life' vocal sound from cheap mics and cheap pres. i just thought... maybe theres some tricks that can get you a tiny bit closer...

oh. i thought you were being sarcastic the first time. heh.

:D I was.

There is no forumula for getting a bigger-than-life vocal sound. If there was, then everyone would be doing it and the big-name producers and engineers would all be out of work.

But part of it has to do with EQ and compression -- they certainly play a role. And doubling is also a common thing, so I suppose I wasn't being totally sarcastic. Reverb or lack thereof obviously plays a role, too.

Sometimes you can get a big vocal sound by doing absolutely no processing at all, too.

A lot also has to do with the arrangement of the song. A sparser arrangement without a lot of busy midrange instruments going on that would otherise compete with the vocal track will naturally "open up" plenty of space for the vocal to stand out in the mix.

It's a lot like graphic design. You'll notice graphic designers talking about the use of white space to draw attention to an important logo or to an image. If the design is busy and there is too much going on and too many flashy colors . . . then it's nearly impossible to allow the main logo or message to stand out and appear large. It's all about offering the proper contrast.

Music is really no different.

Hire God to do your vocal.

He doesn't seem to be doing jack-all at the moment for anybody that really could use the help.

AMEN to that, brother!

yeah. i sort of thought that's probably what it is :-P if there was some easy trick i can do, then why would people pay lots of money to go to big studios :-P

thanks.

Maybe he meant the New York trick. . . mult, compress, compress, eq, de-ess, blend/automate under orginal vocal.

Upfront and/or dynamic. . .well, blend to taste. :)

what I would like to hear is an example of a "god-like" vocal on a horrible song. I bet nobody would pay attention .

I would also like to hear a down-to-earth, normal everyday, plain-old vanilla vocal on a wildcard song. Did someone say smash hit?

hmm i'd never bothered to read that thread before. are you a christian yourself, DJL?

Crazydoc, you seem relatively educated for a non-believer. how come, i thought religious studies were banned in your schools over there? or were you brought up in a christian home and it put you off?

a lot of rhetoric gets talked about God, but it comes down to this. if you don't know him, i suggest you don't know that much about him either.

for example. H2oskiphil doesn't know DJL. all he knows about him is what little he can glean from talk about him and the occasional times he talks about himself rather than gear. so maybe H2oskiphil shouldn't presume to know what DJL is thinking all the time.

?

Gee, I didn't know that "believing" was a sine qua non of being educated. :)

But I know how you meant the question. I grew up in a christian/protestant environment. My mother went on to get her masters in theology and a career teaching in a seminary because of arguments we had when I was a teenager. When I was old enough to start thinking for myself, I decided that religious belief was bullshit, and I haven't changed my mind yet, in peace or in war.

Yes, there are atheists in foxholes. And some of the worst scum of the earth are religious leaders.

Anyway, I don't want to get started on this crap again - each to his own, just don't shove yours in my face. :)
