Fancy Rock N' Roll
One of my system running WinXP Home.
P!!! 1Gig, 256MB SDRAM, Asus MB Via Chipset, SBLive DE5.1, HD 3,2GB (system) and 20GB (audio). Both 5400 Rpm. CD-RW 4X4X24, and CD-ROM 50X. Just when I play any sound (winamp, CD audio, or even working with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.03), there's a glitchy noises often comes thru my SBLive. Somewhere between "crying baby" and "DJ's scratching" sound. Very noticeable. Annoying. I've tried 3 versions of SB driver (Microsoft, Creative, & KX) reinstall and uninstall over and over, Just don't know what's going on. I've played around with the CD audio and IDE cables, no help. It wasn't there with my old config.

Q : Does anyone know what's posibly going wrong ? (Cables, drivers, etc ?)

...umh, I got better clue.

1. The sound getting harder & louder if I increase the memory usage (loading soundfonts, open a programs in background, opening -more than 1MB doc- file in Word while listening to winamp). Just when the files loaded into memory...

2. I have a long -Windows is shooting down your PC- time, before the screen "It's save to turn off your PC". Almost four minutes after I turn it off...

3. Checking / unchecking things in Windows kernell mixer doesnt help.

THANK YOU's !!!

Very strange. Try to disconnect all cables from the back of your PC except for monitor, keyboard and mouse and see if the niose disappears. Try to change the SB slot to another PCI.

I did that brutha...
Seems like the poblem is running inside my CPU. The glitchy sound still there. I've tried to make some adjustion in memory setting under Win XP's control panel, still no help... :(

Sounds to me like a driver type issue.

...well, it could be Track. But as I know, I uninstall the old driver (Microsoft), pull the card off the slot, clean the registry & all files related, shutdown, reinstall the card & using different type driver (KX) the problem's still there. Do the procedure again this time with Creative's driver, still get that crackle noise. Finally, I took off the MB out of case, clean everything from dust & route up every wires wisely & carefull. Turn on... dammit, it still there. :(
Hmmm... I dunno what's wrong, but things are getting clearer now is the noise type, it's a crackle. It affected the output when I playback wave files only (.wav, mp3, Sonar audio playback, etc ). No problem with MIDI / soundfont, cdaudio, etc... Here's the noise sample...

Anyone...?

Does the card have a S/PDIF input or output? If so, it could also be a timing issue. For example if it was set to S/PDIF clock and you were trying to record analog, that's the type of symptom you'd get too. Hmmm.......

No Track, the card doesn't have any SPDIF out, however there's SPDIF input. But I never use SPDIF before in this system, and I've checked if it's somehow turned on, but nope... And as I mentioned before, it affected playback only. On any playback software. I think can record clear wave with it, but when I playback, it's crackling. The wave block is okay, just the output.
The sample was captured on CEP2, while playing back the original track in winamp. Using "What U hear" recording setting, I can have the crackle also recorded into new dirty file. :)

I am probably not going to be able to help much, but what was your "old" configuration you had before the crackling started?

...It's a loong, long story. Here we go. I used to have double partition on each HD. The 20GB was master primary, the 3.2 was slave. So I had logically 4 partitions. WinXP home on the 20GB. Everything's fine. Then I decided to make them simple. Both re-partitioned with PQ Partition Magic on my other computer, then reformat 'em. Single partition each. I put the 3.2 as the master, 20GB as the slave. I reinstalled WinXP Home on 3.2. and the rest apps. I use 20GB for audio work. That's it... the problem begun... Do you think I better reserve the HD order again and reinstall WinXP on 20GB (as primary master) ? I won't have that time for this week, since I'll use the PC very heavy these days (maybe next week)... and still I think it's a driver/config thingy... but... I DUNNO...

Gosh what the...:D

Cum ooon guys, don't you have anything to say...? pleease.. :(
Thank You. I appreciated all of you... ;)

Most of what you just posted is over my head - however:

When setting up my system, every post I read or person I talked to said go SCSI or if you get IDE, it has to be at least 7200 (access speed?)

Is it your HDs speed - isn't 5400 too slow, and could that be causing your problem? Particularly as XP is such a memory hog?

Hope this helps,

foo

Don't Break My Heart, My Itchy-Glitchy Heart

James,

Whenever I'm playing MP3s with MusicMatch jukebox AND reading BBs or newsgroups, I too get an itchy-glitchy sound. It occurs when I scroll through posts. The best way I can describe it is the sound being chopped up into little chunks and sent to the speakers with tiny gaps between each chunk. My guess is that it's because my processor is being time-shared between the audio app and video.

The sound was particularly abhorrent when using M$ Word & MMJB. So bad in fact that I couldn't listen to MP3s and use Word at the same time.

I don't notice any glitches with CDs though. I can happily read HomeRecording BBs and listen to Celine Dion warbling away. There again, listening to Celine Dion, you just wouldn't know whether there were any glitches or not would you? :)

I'm at work right now, but I'll D/L your sound sample tonight and lend it an ear.

Actually, I don't own any Celine Dion CDs. And she doesn't own any of mine either ;)

Blues Meister my dearest brother... ;)
Glad to hear from you again... I know you'll show up somehow... :D I've researched on google, about this issue. Seems like it's a world wide problem regarding to several VIA chiped MB, (most found on ASUS) and all PCI kind of SoundBlaster's sound card. Crackling, poping, and Celline Dion's itchy ball's sound... :D Problem most found noises on CPU activity rather tyhan CD rotation. However, I've got many tips outthere to tweaking the BIOS setup (Set PCI latency to lower than 32), Uninstall MB's driver provided by ASUS CD I've got upgrade to vers 4.43 downloadable, upgrade Creative's driver with the latest from their UK site (Europe version)

http://www.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/latest.asp

NOT Asian/American site driver... (guess why?) but leave the devdlr32.exe alone..., etc... I've tried all these suggestion, but still got Celline Dion sang for me...:)

Here's the site I've visited just yesterday.

http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2001mar/chi20010329005090.htm

I wan't ABBA... not Celline Dion... argh...

And foo... you're right. But what can I say, it's actually not my PC. I went here (Finland) for several weeks, researching and visiting my brother Bill. He borrowed me one. I use this PC to do internet, MS word, Ms excel things beside little practise & musical warming up (since I'm freezing due to winter here), so I don't feel need to upgrade it. I miss homeland & my PC. But I'll keep that in mind if I still can't work it out. (...can I go home now ?)

For now I think I'll reverse the HD back to my old config, reinstall Win XP, and see what will happen...
Really... glad to hear from you guys... :) You ROCKS !!!

It solved...
I removed everything, reinstall Win XP, all is well for now... So I guess it was drivers thingy silly itchy balls. Thank's everyone...

Now, go back makin music...

My Heart Belongs To Celine...

Hey James,

That's good news! :) My MB is an ASUS LX-6, it's getting on a bit now (but so am I ;) ) That may explain the MP3 Glitchy & Scratchy Show whenever I scroll through newsgroups.

I am on a slow upgrade path at the moment, it really depends on the severly limited availability (to me) of Aussie dollars... First on my list is a new video card (see my HS2002 Problems posts on the Cakewalk BB). After that, a new MoBo & CPU with 512MB RAM.

But in the mean time I've got a garden to esatablish at my new house and a driveway to put in :( And a LOT of work to do in the garden beneath the blistering, merciless Western Australian sun ;) Thank goodness for Celine and her warbling to keep me sane...
