Give me your opinion on this mix

I guess you think we'll hate it because it is somehow "extreme" music. Hrm, nothing is extreme anymore. Not to me. I listened to stuff 10 times heavier than this in 1988.

Anyways....

Everything sounds pretty great. Cymbals/hi-hat too loud for my tastes. This is pretty much exactly how this type of music should sound.

In other words--GREAT JOB!!!

Rad, thanks. This is a side project of mine. I listen to everything from Blink-182 to Slayer to Pig Destroyer & almost every thing in between but I figured I might be one of the few on here.

Listening taste around here is varied. The recording engineer types that are around here, which there are tons, have pretty much heard/recorded everything and can give objective opinions regardless of music type.

Honestly, most of us care less for the music and more for the production. Although the tastes *do* tend to revolve around more song oriented music than technical/image type bands.

So in general you'll see lots of rah-rah Beatles, boo-hiss Dream Theater, and boo-hiss Good Charlotte.

However, all of us are fans of Bitch Slap. :)

Holy shit, I'm 16 again. What a trip.

Awesome mix, man. Cloneboy is right, it sounds just like hardcore is supposed to sound. I mean, I'm sure we all wish we could get tones like Converge "Jane Doe", but that's pretty damn slammin. Well done.

Hot diggity damn!

The song is awesome. Great job.

Where you guys from?

wow nice song,

I'm practising how to sing like that, can you give me any tips?
I can produce a kind of sound like that with lots and lots of pressure at the back of throat but then i'm not producing alot of volume.
When you scream like that without a mic is it very loud or loud? or is it rather quiet?

Sorry for stupid questions ;)

I'll ask my singer for any special tips but I think he just talks tough. You do have to push hard & it's pretty loud. On my Digi 001 I have the pre all the way down & it's the perfect signal.

My opinion has nothing to do with the mix itself which I think was very well done, but personally, I thought the lead vocal was weak. Maybe it's just the vocalists style, but I just wasn't feelin him (he sounds like he's "trying" to sound hard). IMHO, I think you should have pushed him harder when you tracked this, and I bet when you guys play live he achieves that grit/power that I feel is lacking in this vocal performance. Being a huge Madball/25 Ta life guy myself, I just think that the vocal performance/style is the single most important element to this type of music, or any type of music for that matter.

You know I gave this a second listen...

And have decided this is either the best or second best metal recording I've heard on this site.

Amazing job!!!

Rick Ta Life is a funny dude. I remember when they played in Lansdale (my hometown) a few years ago. I was 14 and just in awe at his presence at one of our shows. Ha. My band gave him a tape of our band. It was recorded with a karoke machine. It was horrible, but we still felt cool.

Nice work man. Personally, I don't feel like the vocals sit well in the mix - they feel isolated from the other tracks (natural/artificial reverb?). The brief sections where the vocals are doubled fit fine. Also, the section of the song where the singer talks fits nicely. I want to the vocals to make me feel the emotion - this is acheived somewhat, but again, if "sync'ed" better with the other tracks, it will mesh better imo. Keep up the strong work.

hi,

Here's my take

Keep in mind I'm listening on the crap speakers that are in my laptop but in the real world not everyone has good speakers or a perfect listening environment,

I think its a pretty good mix. Everything seems balanced for the most part, I like the vocals and guitar sounds as well. Not a store ready mix but probably could me with some mastering.

Oh my god! I can't believe there are so many hardcore kids on this bbs! You don't even know how stoked that makes me. Madball?? This rules! xbrianx, you've done a wonderful thing!

I have to agree with Clit Torres about the lead vocal. How did you do the vocal? If you tried an LD condenser on a stand with a pop screen and all that jive, try just handing the guy a 57 and letting him cup it like he does live. That might capture the live vibe and get that cool diaphragm distorion. That's how Carl Beuchner (Earth Crisis) did all his vocals and those sound sweet. Keep rockin!

It looks like you've gotten a lot of rah rah positive feedback here, which is great ... but not much in the way of real helpful criticism, so I'll give you a little here ...

Overall, you're on the right track with this. You have most of the bases covered, and listeners should respond favorably to it as they obviously have.

My major beef here is that the constant cymbal crashing is driving me nuts. :D I realize that's an arrangement issue and a personal opinion, so never mind.

My other major beef with it is that the kick sounds a little too defined. Now I realize that's part of the style and genre, but I think you might have went a little overboard with the beater click ... by a hair. Kick must have less of the clickity-clackety. I want to feel it in my gut. It's supposed to be a kick drum -- not a wood block.

The other thing I thought you might have gone a little overboard on is the trademark squashed-to-hell snare thing. Again, an appropriate thing for that genre, I realize, and I like it, but I just think you went a little overboard -- that's all. The snare may have lost just a hair of attack/punch in the smooshing process. I want to hear a little more attack and feel it in my chest; again just a little more. It's really close, though -- really close.

Good job, though, overall. Keep it up -- sounding good.
