I don't do too many covers, but my 16 year old daughter wanted to do this song. The problem is that nobody at my house (definitely including us two) can sing. At all -- not even a little bit. Also, I don't speak Portuguese. But that's what's so great about home recording :D

(setting up for the rhythm guitar take)

I used Naiant X-Qs (as pictured) for the main rhythm track - I don't have a nylon string guitar, so I used a felt Uke pick on a parlor sized Art&Lutherie guitar. Still learning how to get good stereo with omnis, but I like the sound of the track, which is dry. I used my modded MOTU traveler pres.

All other recorded tracks use an ART Digital MPA (bass and electric guitar - also dry - are direct into it) - my older daughter and I used an Oktavamod MK-319 mic, and my younger daughter used a C414B-ULS.

I used the heck out the Logic equivalent of autotune - "pitch correction" and "pitch shifter" -- just to make it listenable -- I stopped short of going all the way, since we're not in Nashville. I did the Portuguese stuff phonetically - it's all wrong, I'm sure.

For the percussion track, my new methodology is to set up the 414, pull out a bag of percussion things and just pass the headphones back and forth between my 18 month old daughter and me and go nuts. I try to pick up as much room noise and activity as possible. I put a little artificial reverb on the output track, too.

My 16 year old had previously gotten discouraged when she heard herself sing, due to improper pitch. With computer assistance, she can hear that she in fact has a good voice timbre (on some passages, she actually sounds good), and so maybe this'll inspire to get back with it (I sure hope so). She plans to retrack. I plan to go back in and make the electric guitar more interesting, to try and approximate the saxophone work on some of the old versions of the song.

I know some of my posts here are like home movies -- sorry to put you through it :D - Happy to hear any suggestions from those of you who manage to listen.

Hi, Antichef!

Sweet and beautifull voice has you daughter!

Girl from Ipanema´s key changes are not easy, then I don´t blame her for any out of tune note.I ´m sure that she can sing any "modern" Avril Lavigne song pretty good.Send my congratulations to her, ok?!

Nice guitar tone (I said on previous thread).

Maybe I'm biased toward this sort of thing right now--my daughter got married this weekend--but I loved it.

I like the home movie quality of the post and the track. Very warm and personal. And yeah, I hear the pitchiness you're talking about with your daugther's voice, but she's got great tone and diction! A very sweet & smooth voice. Definitely worth sticking with. I hope she does!

Thanks for sharing this with us...:D

Thanks!!! Serves me right that the first response would be from Brasil :o - (and your silence with regard to my Portuguese is much appreciated ;) ).

Summer's almost upon us, and hopefully we'll be able to focus on skills development. I'll dig up this thread when the next version is ready.

My late grandpa used to always play this song on the piano, so it will always be special to me. Just hearing the chords and melody is nice. Glad ya did it! :)

Well, if you never had contact with portuguese, I´m sure your pronounce is much better than my germany:eek:, or japanese:eek::eek::D, for example...;)

(it´s all theory,I sing pretty bad (any language) and my "spoken" english is not much better too...:D).

....waiting for the next version!

I am sure Miss Pinheiro would be pleased to see that 'her song' still is an inspiration to newer artists :)

whoa... i had no idea there was a real girl from Ipanema!

As for the recording... it's definitely got the home video feel. I'll be honest I don't really get the baby noises... but then again, i don't really get kids yet (none of my own, and no plans for any in the near future) :p But i like the guitar strumming and the piano fills, and i dig the tone of the electric guitar.

The baby goes "aaahhh" ha ha -

heh. get it? :D

She (the baby) was digging it, and she's still the best singer in the family until we practice some more. I don't think I'm going to tell either daughter that the real "Girl" posed for playboy -- only a matter of time before they find it on wikipedia anyway

edit: More background on the baby sounds -- she's a member of the "band" and the production crew, she normally gets star billing and she really wanted her own verse. So we strapped headphones on her and put her in front of the mic. She also did most of the percussion :)

This was enjoyable to hear. Personal sounding.

The guitar has very good rhythm and drives the song well.

Your younger daughter sounds really cute on it, and has quite a nice tone.

Your older daughter has a very beautiful sounding voice... good voice for this song. Chain her to the studio desk and feed her only bread and water until she learns pitch control at a level that suits the natural sweetness of her voice. Get her a vocal coach even. A voice that good-sounding rates working hard to get good pitch control. And I mean all that as a compliment, not a dig.
