Best mix yet. Very real sounding. IMO real always is more expressive than artificial.

Your music is unusually honest. A rare thing. I guess that's why I've always thought that prominent artificial verb was out of place in it.

Some really varied instruments in there ray. Very unusual. I heard a kind of hiss or like an amp turned on loud but not playing effect...was that by design?

Hi Folks,
I've applied some of True's suggestions, (adding some drums has caused me to think & play about quite a bit but no result as yet), am struggling to implement Tim's - but I'll get there - and have cleaned up some noise.
I've stripped away as much reverb as possible - the only stuff left was ON tape.
De-essing was a total failure - (mda de-esser) - but then again the free VST doesn't have much in the way of variation OR instruction.
The recorder/flute line is still to be re done - some serious distortion in the recording.
Any comments on the mix at this point?

Lovely piece... Sounds just the tiniest bit, well, stiff to me; like you weren't relaxed. With the notable exception of the vocals, which seem right at home.

The cello wallows just a little, like it was a teeny bit behind the curve, but it's a lovely touch; I just love all the organic instrumentation. Feels sort of Renaissance-era in the progression. Very cool concept piece, man...

Llarion,
Stiff, yes. I recorded this as a project for my cello lessons - to avoid scales etc. Itas the 1st I did straight to Calewalk - no tape. So I was apprehensive & learning as I went. That comes through I know.
Monkey Allen,
Thanks mate - i should've added more but ran out of dexterity. I'll listen for & clean up any hiss - ta.
Timothy,
I see your point about the verb now - &, I guess, that shows the value of recording dry - I was limited to my experince with 4 track tape & trried to get everything in one go. Thanks.
Incanus,
Thanks mate - no - no more instruments - other than a touch more percussion as per True's idea. I was going to try to record out pump organ but can't really hear anything in the arrangement to add.
Ido1957,
Thanks cobber. Terry wants to rerecord his parts so we'll see what happens vox wise - his parts are inserted MP3s after all. I will tweak a little of what's here though.
True,
I haven't been able to try any of your ideas yet as we've spent the week with plumbers & builders ripping out our collapsing kitchen. I'll play with the ideas soon. I hope I have a pitch shifter somewhere - if not may have to pull out the guitar & play an octave up as suggested. Thanks ever so much for the detail.

Well hell, props to you man; I've always wanted to play the cello. I consider it the most expressive instrument.

Dude, the last mix sounds really cool. I noticed the strums sounded lower and it build slowly.

Nice, very cool. The flute is just right for the piece and overall sounds really cool.

Like how it's drenched in verb or something yet the overall mix is clean and not too verby. :)

You are welkom Ray!

I will be looking forward to hear what changes you apply. I am very curious about it too! Ideas on how something will sound, can go either way. ;)

Good luck with your kitchen!!

True :)
