Gig bag=helps protect from scratches
Hard shell=helps protect from cracks, abrasions, and breaks
Calton case=helps protect when you accidentally run over your guitar with the tourbus :D

I don't own a gigbag.

I don't gig...but only two of them are stored in gig bags.

My Regal Dobro didn't come with a hardcase...but my cheapie, no name Japanese bass did!!... :D

gig bag is fine for going to a buddies house to jam but a case is required for gigs.

My apologies for anyone who may have taken offense at the "simplicity" of the question. I was originally planning to set this up as a poll with multiple options--including a category for "I can't believe you're polling on such a no-brainer topic." But for whatever reason--operator error kicked in OT this morning and this went out without the poll choices.
You're all correct, this is a no-brainer; but I just thought I'd throw the topic out for discussion because if you're like me and have been playing for any length of time (2+ years, or in my case, 38 years), some people seem to regard you as being an "expert." And this question seems to crop up when people ask me for advice on equipment purchases. I thought this would be a good topic to cover for any newbies who come across this site.
I want to thank everyone who contributed a response and for not being rude or condescending in her or his response.
I'm going to close the thread now.
Again, my thanks for your contributions and play on.
