I recently swapped out the Burstbucker pickups in my Les Paul. Apparently all BB pickups and the 57 classics are purposely wound with different number of turns on the 2 coils of a single humbucker. They do this to recreate the pickups of the late 50's when they couldnt accurately count the windings. Because of this imbalance the pickups are noising in high gain situations. If the 2 coils are not equal the humbucking properties of the pickup are compromised. I replaced the BB's with a 500T and 496R and even with the hotter output the pickups are very quiet.

Good job! Now send those useless, junk Burstbucker pups to me...

Have you tried adjusting the pickup height on the 500/496 combo? That's what I'm using an an SG, and get tons of gain from both. I just had to get the height dialed in. I was a bit disappointed with them also for the same reason, until I made that adjustment about 6 months later.

Hi,
I have an SG-61 with those in it also, I am confused with your comment about being "dissapointed with them also for the same reason" I was dissapointed with the Burstbuckers not the 500T/496R set. I have my pickups fairly low because they have enough gain anyway and they are clearer when they are not so close. Also you get more sustain because there is less magnetic drag from the pickups dampening the strings. Right now I have 2 Les Pauls and the SG with the 500T/496R combo. And for when I am feeling mellow I have an ES-335 with the factory 57 Classics. (the noisy vintage sound).
