Gibson P100's and New Coke.

I can't seem to decide which was a worse idea.

I wanted to buy an Les Pauls Jr. Special Lite, because I really like the double cutaway Specials. But I couldn't believe that none of the current Gibson USA production line has P90's anymore.

I love the sound of P90's on all the Replacements/Westerberg songs, not too mention Neil Young, the tone is incredible. So who decided that they'd leave P90's in the Epiphone products, and use them in Heritage Collection and Custom Shop products (out of my price range).

So I tried out a Special with P100's. Sounds like crap. Generic Les Paul Clone Tone. I played an Epiphone SG JR next to it, and the $200 Epiphone roared.

Has anybody bought a P100 Gibson? Has anybody changed them to P90's?

I believe that Seymour Duncan does a great P-90 replacement pickup.

If he stopped making them, try calling a guy called Lindy Fralin ( I think he's in Richmond, Va) Check the Vintage Guitar website - they probably have a contact number/email for him. Lindy makes replacement pickups which are exact replicas of the originals - and maybe he still rewinds the old ones and has something from way back.

... and you're right, there is nothing else sounds like 'em.

Good luck,

foo
