Well, I have an Epiphone Les Paul. I dropped about 200 in it to put EMGs and have had it upgraded significantly (professional setup, fretwork, etc...) and it plays and sounds wonderful. It's heavier than the new Epi's for some reason. But it plays and sounds great. I'd say go with the Epi then upgrade it overtime because that will get you a better guitar than if you just buy that low end gibson that everyone and their dog has. If you want a Gibson, the best one they are currently making (in my opinion) is the LP Classic. It feels great and plays great, I don't like the pickups for my purposes (I don't like any gibson pickups) but they may suit you just fine. I'd say if you'd like to own a gibson, just save up for the Classic. You won't regret it. But then again, if you're willing to save up that much, why not just get a caparison? haha.
