I want to know how this guitar sounds compared to the other les paul's. IF i am going for the les paul sound im only going to do it once, i dont want to work my way up the chain of les pauls. IS the vintage mahogany Just as good or almost just as good as the other les paul's or should i save a little longer and get either the studio.

Go to your local Guitar Center.
Play them all.
You'll know which one you want, and which one you can settle for.

I played an LP Studio exclusivly for about eleven years and they *can* be great guitars.

You have to make sure you get a good one!
Mine rocks, naturally ;)

In short - what the other guy said. Go have some fun playing some, and take somebody else who knows their guitars with you for a second opinion.

Enjoy!

that doesnt help me know which one is better out of the two...i dont have a "guitar center" around here, no place has the lp vintage mahogany that i am aware of

I had the Vintage mahogany for a couple months. It was a little bassey(?) sounding. so i bought a GE7 to help with the sound and it still didn't help to much.It also was a lil heavy. Not that i couldn't handle it but anyways i sold it and bought a Gibson SG Standard.
Check Harmony Central .com and read the reviews.

Guitars aren't shovels :) - there's no way to *really* know which one is better for a person without playing it by this very person and then letting this very person speak.
You can get an "advice" (about which guitar is "better") from a person with limited experience of playing various guitars ...and well, that may make you feel like it "does" help you to know. But any experienced guitar player will tell you, that even the same brand/model/year guitars are not the same.
If there's absolutely no chance for you to go to some store to try many different guitars, then you can do:
a. Order VM from retailer that have 30day return/no question asked policy. Try it at home, if you feels right for you, then just be happy with it.
or
b. If buying Studio you'll get color choice :p , so you already gonna love the look of it - that's a big move :) on the way to completely falling in love with the guitar ;), but then after you get it shipped and play-try it - it will be the same 'deal' as with VM .
If you can spend $1,200 ..or what ever Studios are going nowdays...then just buy one and LOVE it. They are great guitar generally speaking. Just , again, make sure you have some return policy where ever you buy it from... cos you simply never know what you may find in the UPS-box ....
good luck
/respects

Well, "IF" you're going for "the Les Paul sound", the Studio will be closer than the Vintage Mahogany.

The original Les Pauls had Mahogany bodies with Maple caps, and the Vintage Mahogany does not have a Maple cap. That's why it would sound more "bassey" as Bolverk put it. The Maple cap adds some brightness to the tone.

But, as Dr. ZEE implied, it's all personal preference.

But in any regard, that's the primary difference...the Studio has a Maple cap and the Vintage Mahogany is...you guessed it...all Mahogany. I think there may be some other differences as well. I'm thinking maybe the VM's come with Burstbuckers? I believe the Studios still come with 490R/498T's.

Vintage Mahogany

I had one of these and it was great. Really low, deep, but not muddy tone. The only problem was the finish, or lack there of. The wood is really soft and you can make a serious dent with a fingernail. I ended up with small nicks and scratches all over it by the time I sold it.
