If you want the best sound out of your LPS just take the pickup covers off.
Then you can use your soldering iron. Really all you have to worry about is screwing up the finish on it. I would dismount the pickups put a towel or a few thick rags on the top of the guitar to protect the finish before even plugging in my soldereing iron. You might want to pick up a solder sucker or some wicking just to be safe. You will get tons more tone and lose some of that mudding sound on the rhythm pickup.
