...And Justice For All
i have a new gibson les paul studio with 2 sets of humbuckers
i would like to replace them with emg-81's and or mix/match with emg-85's are there special emg's for gibson?

No there isn't and if its the 81 and 85 that you want you can buy the zakk wylde set. My only suggestion would be to also add an active presence control switch for that extra punch in the ass!

where does the active presence control switch get mounted?

ive never used one---

will i need the Long Shaft Les Paul Control Pots for the 81/85's?

i have 2 humbuckers in my les paul - i just replace with 2 emg hums correct?....

i found a brand new set on ebay - 81's the zw ozzy kerry hb

Yes, you would need long shaft pots, and if you get the presence boost you can use a push/pull pot for the switch.

EMG can supply you with everything you need, except that I think the Presence boost stuff only comes with a mini toggle switch, which would mean soldering on the board, which will void your warranty on that component. I'm not 100% sure on a long shaft 25k push/pull pot, so I'd probably check with EMG on that one before I did anything with the presence control, unless of course you want to put another hole in your guitar, which I would recommend against, simply because it will hurt your resale value (I HATE how much of a concern that has become in the last few years - it used to be that, with a new guitar, you just did what you needed to make it work without worrying about resale - but with the guitar market the way it has become, it is always a serious consideration). Either way, unless you are VERY comfortable with the tools involved, it is best to get it done by a professional repair person - if for no other reason than that your EMG warranty is void if you do any soldering yourself.

About the presence control switch... The one I got was from emg and you won't need to drill any holes in your LP. It's a pot that replaces your tone control. Unfortunately I can't give you details on how to install it because I had mine put in at the shop. But it's very do-able (if that's a word) and worth it. Another cool item is a low battery led that lights up when your battery goes below 7V. Very handy and easy to install. (even I could handle that one) I just put it into one of the back plates. Here's the link to the site if you're interested

AH!, you got the presence CONTROL, not the presence boost (they make both - and yes, the presence control does boost, it is just variable). I was confused. Yes, you could do that, though you would lose the independent tone controls in favor of a master tone and a presence control. That would work fine, and is, in my mind, an even better way to do it.
