If I wanted an ambient distorted snare sound, I would either start with loops / samples that had an ambient distorted snare sound, or I would take a snare sound and add distortion or ambiance...

...but how I did this would depend entirely upon the kind of ambient distorted snare sound that I wanted. I might perform some major EQ'ing to achieve a "lo-fi" sound. I might compress heavily. I might run the sample through a mic'd guitar amp. I might use some reverb. I might use some gated reverb.

The quicker beats sound like brushes on the snare but the every 4th beat sounds like a stock sample of what is called hand clap.

It's actually an EQ thing. You want to cut out all the frequencies except for the a small range of the mid-high's (2K to 8K). On a graphic EQ, it looks like this (the green line).

Yup....... that's a very good way to do it !
But to me it just sounded to fake in the recording (and listening to it on u tube through the computer speakers doesn't help much) it just didn't have a real snare sound or part 2k-6k of a real snare sound to it.
