Now right now I'm using just my computer, sonic Foundry, a basic computer mic, with the stock sound card that came with my computer.

Now I don't know how much I need to explain things but if I leave anything out let me know & I'll answer your question...

I would like to get some equipment to make a home studio- it's not going to be very big- but I like quality- instead of quanity (did I spell that right lol)

the only instrument I use is my acoustic/ Electric guitar and I just plug it into the mic. jack....

What do I need to getting me started - For Recording Vocals & guitar.

Now for money- If I piece it together one by one I guess I could spend about 1k-2k on each piece if it worth the money (1,000-2,000 lol)

I would like to get away with only needing 1-2 pieces but if you need certain stuff or junk or equipment then that would be fine to add blah, blah blah.....

I'm really bad at explaining.... Please help? thnx

oh ya & where do you buy the stuff?? hehe thnx

Basic stuff: (IMHO)

MICS
1 Shure SM 57 (Gutar cabs/drums)
1 MXL603s (Ac. Guitar/Drum Overheads)
1 SP C1 (vox)

PREAMP
1 AudioBuddy preamp

SOUNDACRD
1 M-Audio "Audiophile" soundcard
or
M-Audio Delta 44

OMG lol I'm so LAME!!! lol

I think that I need to research this alot more before I ask for help- then At least I know what I'm talking about and asking about lol... hehe I'll ask again later on CHEERS" *-*

Go here www.mercenary.com

If you are willing to spend $1000 per item don't waste your time with stuff like an audio buddy.

Check out their preamps and digital/analog convertors. You will need 2 channels of convertors and at least 1 channel of mic/instrument preamp. Then you need a soundcard with a digital input to accept the signal from the convertor.

Then you also need recording software and some monitors.

Oops. I hadn't noticed about the $$$ you plan to spend.

What Tex said is true. Get a better preamp and convertors.

Actually, I still think most of flapo1's advice is pretty good. The mics are all very good for the money, so is the sound card (especially the Delta 44). The Audiobuddy, or its bigger brother the DMP3, will also give you a very nice sound. You really don't need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on equipment to get great sound. And I don't recommend it for someone just starting out--unless you are rich, then spend away!

But if you aren't rich, even a modest setup will cost some bucks:

PREAMPS:
For $180 you can get a single channel SP VTB-1
For $200 you can get a dual channel DMP 3

Or you can buy a little Mackie or Soundcraft mixer for $400 - $500

MICS:
Two MXL 603s mics are $80 each
One SP C1 mic is $230
One NTK is $500 (splurge)
Two SM57 (just because) $80 each

Good cables/wires $200

One RNC Compressor $200

SOFTWARE:
Sonar $300
Sound Forge $200

MONITORING SYSTEM:
Powered nearfield monitors $600
Headphones $100

Now you have three or four very decent preamps (two for stereo micing guitar and one for voice), some mics even the pros can love, a world class compressor, very powerful recording and editing software, a decent monitoring system for tracking and mixing, and wires to hook it all up.

The cost? Somewhere between $2,000 - $3,000.

Sure, you could easily spend 5-10 times this amount, but will it really make your recordings sound and better? I doubt it.
