Im looking to get started in recording. I want to go the computer route, but am a little confused on what else is suggested. My computer should be fine :

AMD athlon 2600+
512mb of corsair XMS pc3200/ddr 400
Western digi. 120gb 7200rpm 8mb buffer

im assuming ill need some sort of interface, sound card, or something like that.
The recording will be pretty much just me (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and vocals) so i dont need a real crazy setup, just something that produces a good final project. Ive searched the internet alot, and this site. My question is what other gear should i get? im looking to spend around $300-400...and ill prolly ebay it, or try to find good deals. All help appreciated greatly.

Yep, you'll need a soundcard.
You'll also need atleast 1 mic.
A mic stand.
Cables.
I would assume a popstopper as well.
I'm new to the recording scene as well, so I won't offer any advice on what brands and models etc.

Recording Set-up

M-Audio has some pretty good internal and external interfaces for recording. Most people purchase the external boxes for portable use with laptops. Most of these in your price range have a couple of lines in for recording a guitar and vocals while allowing you to connect FX Processors, Firewire external HD and some powered monitors for sound. The best thing is to spend some time on www.musiciansfriend.com and get the specs for all so you know what your looking for on E-Bay.

You will need some recording software. A good entry level program could run from $100 - $150 and there are several to choose from. I have heard good things about Cake Walk and Cubase but you should do the research.

Your memory may be on the low end. Computer based recording requires a good deal of resources so the more the better. Most people I know started with 1Gb and expanded.

Also the mics are important. You should spend some time in the other threads on this site because mics can make the difference.

I hope this helps, have fun!

Oh yeah, go to the Microphone forum and take a look at the FAQ. It's a great FAQ.
