Getting Routed

Hi folks,
Well, everything seemed to be going alright, but suddenly I can't record a newly added audio track from an existing one. What have I done?
Can anyone please help?

Can you give us some specifics of what hardware/software you are working with?

What do you mean - are you trying to copy a track into a new track, or trying to record a new track in synch with one you already recorded? What DAW are you using?

I must admit, due to my confusion, the problem as I described it, wasn't clear. However, having 'experimented' with the VST connections and device setup for a few hours [ grrrr ], I've managed to sort it out.
The real problem was that I wasn't able to record midi at all, nor could I record an old midi track in the project to a newly added audio track.
