Getting rid of outside noise

Alright, i need some assistance thinking of ways to get rid of outside noise in my soon to be live room. Whenever ive recorded in here before, i pick up a little crap from the land of the outside. The thing is, i live on the connecticut river...alot of loud as boats and police hoovercrafts going by (these things are loud as HELL.) Also, railroad tracks are right across the street, these are mildly audible, escpecially when they run one of them 800 car frieght trains. One more thing, across the river is an international airport, quite a bit of airtraffic, escpecially in the afternoon.....So, i was wondering if there are any cheap methods (maybe blankets and shit), to help get rid of or cut down on these outside sources. If anyone has any ideas that might help, please let me know.

No cheap solution to that problem. Mass and airtight-ness keep sound in or out.

Blankets, Aurelex foam, will do nothing to keep outside noises outside.

Isolation does though. But it's expensive!!!

CHEAP? Seriously, best advice. Move. Especially if you do NOT own this, as there is no such thing as "temporary" isolation construction. Unless you build a booth. Which may be your best bet, as far as cheap is concerned. Tell us about your situation there though, and maybe we can suggest things. However, there ARE things that you can do with very little investment to improve things. Then see. Untill you do though, you won't really know how good the existing space performs.
The thing is, sound transmission is occurs 2 ways. Airborn and structural. Airborn noise transmits through the structure because of various things. For one, the sound transmission loss of various materials such as glass, plywood exteriors, gaps around doors and windows, vents, and plain old vibration of the building exterior, which then structurally transmits through the framework to other interior spaces. But better than me explaining what "little" I know about it, here is a link to an article that can tell you far better than I, AND has simple improvement solutions for people who have small budgets.
But if you insist on staying there, and want SERIOUS isolation, be forwarned that it not only is expensive, you need certain existing conditions, and the construction is NOT simple. IF you need more, come on back. Check this out.

thanks...im not lookin for perfect isolation, i was just wondering if there was anything i could do to help it out a little. It probably wont be too big of a deal, i was just wonderin if anything simple like blankets might help at all. And oh yea, moving isnt really an option seeing as im still a youngin' (im pretty sure im still 15). So ill have to deal with what i got. Thanks.

Here is a "simple" test. Drape a blanket over your head and listen. :D
 
Something else to try; if your gear allows you to INVERT the polarity of a track, try sticking a mic OUTSIDE, with as long a cord as you can; Always record TWO tracks at a time; the one you WANT, and the one you DON'T want - invert the OUTSIDE track and mix JUST THOSE TWO, adjusting the level of the CRAP til it cancels as much as possible; use the MIX of the two tracks as your FINAL - do this with each live track.

Before I get a crapload of flames on this, I know it's not perfect (or even close) - but neither is your situation, and this trick MAY help remove some of your noise. Nuthin' to lose, and you may learn something (which ALWAYS makes it a GOOD day)... Steve

If you're using software, some programs will let you use a particular track as a "noise print", and you can accomplish the above WITHOUT all the steps I outlined...

Honestly, I feel for you. I do. It's noisy enough here. I can't imagine having all that stuff going on 24/7. I'd need LOTS of meds!
