Good question. There are some good theories being expounded, but they are being overshadowed by adolescents trying to prove their machismo with hateful invective.

Sigh...

My original response dealt with ways to minimize hiss by practicing sound (pun intended) recording techniques. That, apparently was so provocative that it ignited a storm of crotch-grabbing, homophobic scatology.

Maybe there's another forum with a better signal to noise ratio...

Vintagedrive, find the source of the hiss and fix it. Noise reduction is a last resort, and only if you have an exceptional/keeper take.

What is it the mods here always say about added DSP?. . .

Thanks for the links, jayoneill! Improper gain-staging can lead to added hiss or distortion, or both, so it's good to keep that in mind.

heh, it's funny how things go went your funneling newbis to dragon and your own web sites to make that almighty dollar, i've seen this many times before when posters step on people to look all big and bad and lead the sheep to there views and there "sales" this part of the fourm should really be called (new sales) not newbies, all the crap starts went some one wants that sale pretty bad or to score points with the webmaster or site owner...

I don't know which model of Tascam you have, but if it's a Porta II 4 Track, I always found that tracks 2 & 4 were filled with hiss before I even started recording to them. I think its produced by the way it records to tracks 1 & 3. Some of the later models were released with Dolby, how much this helped I couldn't tell you.


If its not an analog 4 track......don't ask me, I'm a newbie too. :D
 
this is a rather entertaining thread to watch a fourteen year old kid (fusion2) argue with all of his superiors (todzilla and mallcorepop) who are clearly trying to help.
