hey all, I do a lot of recording, and I rely extensively on my plugins, like a lot of newer guys do, I think... anyways, I feel like I'm outgrowing some of my plugins... reverb especially. I'm thinking of picking up a piece of outboard reverb, but I have no real clue how to integrate it into my setup... any piece of outboard gear i've ever used has been applied while tracking (compressor, EQ, guess that's about it ). Anyways, if I picked up a reverb unit, how would I best insert it into my set up? I would assume I'd have to do some patching out and then back in if I didn't want to be stuck with the settings I had when I recorded... I use a tascam 428 for my ad/da. also, are there any reverbs that are available for under 200 that would be a considerable step up from the plug in vareity?
I own a Lexicon MPX100 and I prefer the verbs I can get with SIR tbh. Not just the verbs themselves but the ability to edit parameters, EQ etc. I'd rather use impulse responses from a PCM91 through SIR than use the MPX100. Of course if I had the money a real PCM91 would be ideal.
I don't know that an outboard unit at the price point you mentioned would be better. I know people often say hardware is better but I'm failry sure they mean 'good' hardware.
EDIT: This article explains integrating outboard gear with a DAW fairly well:
