Getting my synth to play louder into my PC

Currently, I am recording directly from my synth into my computer and recording with Cakewalk. I am using a Delta 44 soundcard.

When I record into Cakewalk with my synth, I am not satisfied with the volume levels that the synth puts out into the computer. When I play the synth, I usually have to put my volume levels on the synth on max, and even then, the levels that are recorded on the computer are not high enough. Basically, this either causes me to have to turn the volume really high on playback, or turn up the trim and track volume up so high that 'hiss' and 'air' is heard on the tracks.

So, is there such a thing as a pre-amp for the synth? Can I use the same pre-amps that mics use? Or am I doing something wrong?

What synth are you using? Most keyboards put out enough without a preamp.

The Roland RS's shouldn't have any trouble. How exactly are you making the connection?

Well, I have the left and right outs from the synth going into the 1/2 in jacks on the Delta 44 that I use. (And of course the Delta goes right into the computer from there). I have also done all that I can think of with the Delta mixing software.

If I were mixing to an outside source this would not be a problem because I can increase the sound with the Delta, but I am using my computer for everything. It's not that it records really really low, but it's not enough to properly record with.

Thanks,

How are the levels when you hook the Roland to an amp?

I think there might be something wrong with the keyboard outputs.

How are the levels from other keyboards into your Delta?

Carl

Get a small mixer. Most keys need a little boost on certain sounds. My keys always sounded better thru a mackie than straight into anything.

The output on the Roland JV-1010 is very weak. I do what Tex does, I have a Spirit mixer.

I have been running all midi gear thru a mixer anyhow, but my outputs on my synths have plus 4 -10 db switches on them so Im assumeing that your problem may be related
