getting more boom/resonance from my kick

I am trying to get a very big organic sounding "boom" from my kick....that almost has a musical tone to it...

not a typical rock/thud sound.

mics at my disposal, re-20, ntk, c1...nt3s..sm57...

any miking/mixing ideas to get this pretty naturally? or kick drum tuning ideas.
 
Try single ply coated heads (front and back with no hole) tuned a little higher with no muffling. Then I would try something like the C1 out in front of the kick...just fiddle with placements till you find what you're looking for.
 
I'd definately put the RE-20 inside the kick and position it to capture the attack and either the NTK or the C-1 out about 3-4' out in front of the kick to get the THUD! Mix to taste.
 
Its definitely about how the kick sounds acoustically. Then you should find a room and then choose a mic

Put an LDC 6-12 inches out in front of the kick for the boom and decay and an sm57 or whatever good dynamic you have 2 inches from the beater on either side of the head for attack. It goes without saying, if youre looking for alot of boom, take out any damping materials you have in there.
 
use a resonant head that does NOT have a hole in it, and make sure you have no damping materials inside. tune the drum really well so the heads resonate off each other.
 
Oh yeah and remember that what works for everyone else may not work for you. My suggestion is don't go buying new heads until it is the last resort. Bass drum heads are just too expensive for that.


I would go with the RE20 in the kick about 3 inches pointed at the beater and the C-1 oin the ouside where ever it picks up the best sound. I firmly believe in a hole inside your bass drum, but tuning really helps too. The depth of the bass drum makes some difference too.

and you could always use some EQ... add a little 50Hz in there :D
