I mess around with distorted guitars a lot and I'll be the first to admit my early attempts left much to be desired and I'm still learning, but I have to agree that the key to a good or great sounding heavy distorted guitar tone lies in backing off the gain settings. Two tracks with lower gain settings and other tonal variations will ultimately result in a much heavier and decipherable distorted guitar tone then one track with too high a gain setting. Gain setting too high can sound thin and washy, undefinable and muddy, then compressed it sounds shit squared. Gain or distortion is in itself compression right? The way it affects the wave form. With amp sims IMO compression can be helpful, I've had the best resulting tones when putting the guitar tracks in question in a master folder and putting the compression on the master folder not on the tracks in it. Or creating a Guitar Buss track with compressor and sending said tracks through it. LIke I said I'm still newbish and there seems to be an unlimited number of ways to acheive a satisfactory end result but that's my 2 cents for now(subject to change without notice)
