what are your secrets to your warm warm mixes? my mixes sound fine, but when compared to basically anything pro, and other local people around here even - my mixes are a lot more "raw" sounding....

i mean, is it just a combination of mastering effects that they've probably put on there or what?

Using words to describe music is never easy. Neverheard raw as an opposite of warm outside cooking. :)

If it sounds raw, as in rough, a little reverb can make things sound smoother. If it sounds raw as in cold, try lessening the high frequencies.

Then put a link in the MP3 clinic and people will dissect your efforts. :)

as far as engineering goes, im at the bottom of the totem pole here.....but i can tell you this with all certainty.....

to get a warm warm mix, you need to record warm, warm tracks......

Turn off the air-conditioner. Oh wait that only works down here in the tropics.

It sounds to me like the other guy is just recording better sounding tracks. Your cymbals are particularly harsh sounding and they really define the high end of any mix. It sounds like it's mainly caused by shitty sounding cymbals but it could be mic placement.

Just a thought- If it's hard to get a good mix than the tracks are the problem. You should be able to simply raise the faders and have a very good sounding mix with a little bass cut here and there. The rest is simply taking out anything that doesn't fit and polishing up any small rough spots.

Effects and dynamic processors are the icing on the cake. If the mix is sounding like shit before you start adding effects don't even bother proceeding because you won't make it sound better, only different.
