Getting a raspy voice

Jack Daniels and Marlbouro's worked for Janice Joplin.

Too good I think.;)

Let's see if i can be of any help.I teach the "raspy"singing style to most of my students as it seems to be pretty popular.
I think dispelling some of the myths about it will save you some grief and even physical damage! Here goes:

1.You can sing this style without destroying your voice.
2.It doesn't require you to drink, smoke, take heroin or be directly related to Tom Waits.
3.It is a technique like any other and can be taught.
4.Having a clean speaking/singing voice doesn't mean you can't do it.
5."pushing"your voice or using excessive volume is not neccesary. It's about tone.
6.It doesn't take alot of effort and shouldn't be done any harder than when you are trying to broadcast in a clear voice.
7.It's not supposed to hurt!
8.It's mostly psychological and is pretty easy once you get the basics of it.

I will be happy to give as much advice as i can,the only problem is that it's hard to teach without hearing the other person.
Explaining exactly how it is done is much harder than just imitating the sounds of the person teaching. After all it's the same way you learned to speak to begin with,it will be the way you learn the fastest.
Something to remember-a long time ago you were about a foot long and when you wanted something you belted out a scream that could peel the paint off the walls and could do it all night if you had to,and could wake up and scream all day long again. You didn't lose your voice then and now you've got much bigger lungs and a lifetime of frustration to fuel it!The ability is definetly there.
If you want to post specific questions or give some samples of your attempts and what blocks your hitting i can give you more direct help.Hope i can be of service to you.

...finally....someone who actually..KNOWS,,what they are talkin about......saves me the trounble of all my lies and inuendo...:D

open ended offer like that .....prepare yourself ....and welcome to the boards:)

Thanks for the welcome Jamal. And i don't mind alot of questions. It's kind of a mysterious topic and i would love to cut down on the amount of gigs i go to and hear the vocalist tearing thier voice to shreds trying to do a yell or sound "raspy".It makes MY throat hurt just hearing it!

RSM: do you have any general tips? anything that would work for most voices?

Axis-Sure i can try to help you out.Can you tell me a bit about what your after style wise so i can narrow it down a bit?If you can name someone you want to emulate it would help as there is a difference in the rasp of a stevene tyler versus someone like the guy in slipknot etc.My first tip is to try to imitate the voice of a person you want to sing in the style of,but do it softly first.Emulate thier tone before going after full volume. You'd be suprised how soft these guys can be sometimes anyway.Amplification does wonders! Most of all don't take it seriously.Relax and exaggerate the sound.Almost like you are a comedian and doing a spoof.ever notice how so many comedians are good imitators of singers? There's a clue there.Fill me in a little more and ill give overall tips for the particular style your after.
A note about your earlier post-DO NOT SING FROM THE BACK OF YOUR THROAT!!!You will shred your chords-it's the worst thing to do!

I got one...

Paul Rodgers...(Bad Company)

I don't know if it's "raspy," but if you can help me to sing like that, there's a free cd in it for you!!!

Okay, so help me just because you're altruistic.

Ok, the style im mainly trying to get near is Andy Waldeck of Earth To Andy. if you need any sound samples you can go here
http://www.earthtoandy.com/lofi/audio.htm
song #2 and #6 are the best examples probably of what im going for.

my voice right now is somewhat similar to Stephan Jenkins from Third Eye Blind but a little more deeper and stronger.

i just read your other post in the other thread about singing techniques like Dave Grohl, i'll try that also.

Ok-let's try some ideas that will help both Chris and axis.(axis-i listened to the examples you gave, thanks)
To begin with neither of those voices is really all that raspy. It won't be hard to do if i can figure a way to get this across via posting! Here's some things to practice that when combined will get you where you need to go.
1.Get used to speaking in a over enunciated DJ or Radio anouncer voice. It's not so that you will sound like them, but it will get your voice up to the front of your mouth and move you into what is called the "head voice"A visual to help will be you should aim your voice at the back of your teeth, almost as if you are able to bite the sound as it comes out. This will also immediately take the weight off of your vocal chords if done correctly.
2.Become the best mimic you can.Especially good imitations as silly as it sounds are cartoon bad guys. They usually have harsh over exaggerated voices and it will get you comfortable with hearing new sounds from yourself and develop a ear for mimicing.
3.I have to be very carefull here because there is a fine line between what you should do and the worst thing you can do!
Start lightly experimenting with VERY SOFTLY gripping the chords in your throat while doing the DJ voice.Do not strangle yourself,it should be a very soft tension like holding a egg.I know this is hard to grasp, but im doing my best since you can't hear me!At the same time let a little more air out than usuall. What will start to happen is the rasp will come from the sound of extra air coming out combined with the mild tension of the vocal chords.
Do these experiments SOFTLY until you start to get a raspy sound. Then it's just a maatter of moving up in volume and clarity and getting a good tone to match.
tell me if this is making any se3nse to you guys and ill try to get it across as best i can.
Let me know how you do and what problems/questions come up.

...so rsm...where should we send the money..for this information...are you kidding me?!?!?...its like auditing a class in school......please continue....:D

jamal(feverishly trying to write)..

thanks for all this info. yea where should we send the money?

one thing im having a hard time understanding is:...............gripping the chords in your throat while doing the DJ voice.Do not strangle yourself,it should be a very soft tension like holding a egg..............

what does that mean?

and also do you have any links to other information about this, i haven't been able to find any.

axis....i think he means literally putting your hand around your throat..and pressing slightly....to chnge the amount of air that can pass through it....:)

maybe?

Ok-this is really tough to try to explain without being in person!
To clarify the "mild tension"You should not be putting your hands on your throat etc.It is just very softly using the muscles in your throat to achieve an effect.I think it would be a good idea to hold off a bit untill i can get a audio example of what i mean.I really don't want to give you unclear advice or have you injure yourselves because i am not explaining things well enough.
For now i would definetly say the best thing you can do is to really listen to and imitate the speaking voices of people who are rough sounding.Mimicing is the way we all learned to speak and you would be amazed at what you can learn just by paying close attention to what your voice and muscles do when you try to imitate sounds.Let me work on getting some kind of examples in audio and as far a web links or resources i don't know of any.
Even in my area(Los angeles)I only know of a few people who teach this technique.
Last-always keep in mind you should never be restricting your air.If there's no air there's no sound.Don't strangle yourself-oxygen is your friend! And as always, listen your throat-if it hurts-STOP.I'll try to get back to you guys shortly.

Yes it is! I tried to pry some vocal coaching and some technique
from my former piano teacher who also taught vocal.

She taught me a lot. A lot that can't be related to on a BBS unfortunately. Ya just gotta be there. It's not like telling someone how to use their fingers to play scales.

But she was only ten years older than me with beautiful blue eyes and blond hair, 5'-4", 100Lbs soaking wet, and MARRIED!

We used to go to lunch together every May 19th though. We shared the same birthday. She really was a looker. Never had the audacity or the fortitude to go any farther with that. But I'll never forget her.
