I'm kind of on a limited budget and I'm trying to figure out what I will need to build my own home studio.

I can afford to spend about $400 on mics. I'd like to get by with two mics on the drumset and one mic for positioning in front of either a guitar amp or bass amp. There will be no vocals, so I needn't worry about that.

Thanks

What are you using to record???? because if you have the options of multitracking, then why not?? cause then you can use all you mics on drumset and the record the rest of the instruments 1 by 1.............. so if U have a 4 track recorder or some other type of multitracker(computer recordin counts too) then try recordin the instruments 1 by 1, and then mixing everything together after =)

If had had $400 to spend on mike I'd buy a good (but not expensive) condensor for vocals and the rest I'd spend on shure sm57/58s.
cheers

Yup....If you will be recording live instruments a lot, mics are a real priority. To start, John is right, try to score one good condensor (having a matched pair really helps drum tracking) and then stock up on 57's.
Good luck.....

A couple of Rode NT-3's and a Shure SM57 might be a good choise. The NT-3 is a very versatile mic which I have used a lot with great results.
