getting a better sound

Hey all im new to the recording world but also very intrigued at the same time. I purchased a behringer b2microphone and m-audio fast track prob. I am trying to do some recordings onto youtube - my problem is the sound I am getting does not have the sweet sounds like some of the other players - e.g. tyler ward, boyce - alex cornell.

Whats missing to get this type of sound? Do I need to run a vocal effect to get that nice sounds they have on their voices??

Certainly no expert here... but the type of mic is certainly going to affect the overall sound quality before plug ins and effects. I'd also consider a better condensor mic via an audio interface rather than a usb one... There will be others along shortly who will no doubt add much more feedback to your query
 
what mic would you suggest is better? is the b-2 more of a basic one/entry level?
also is the fast track pro a usb interface? what type of interface would you suggets for an audio one?
 
Well i know at least with Tyler Ward, like his ET cover. That was pre recorded at a studio, and then he just played along to the song. Pretty much just like a music video. A lot of people are doing that now, and its almost becoming the new standard for Youtube covers haha. But i'd try learning a little bit on EQ and Compression. It will really help clean up recordings, and make things fit together nicely.
 
i think my biggest problem is, im just recording straight from imovie, then uploading to youtube without any effects. what about this guy, his sounds is so clean and crisp and it looks like its a live take - search youtube - 1983" Neon Trees cover by Alex Cornell

does he just add reverb to his voice? or does it run throug a vocal compressor?

you can see the guy is sitting in front of professional recording gear... you think that song wasn't mixed and edited? There is all kinds of compression and reverb on those vocals. You record into a DAW, then you mix...

not straight into imovie

and before you ask me what a DAW is Let me google that for you
 
ok so let me get this right. if your recoridng one live take onto youtube, you record into an audio recording software, use imovie just to record the video - use the software to add compression, eq, reverb .. then paste the new vocal track over the one recorded from the video?

you will need video editing software to sync the audio and video track... maybe imovie lets you import a new audio track? IDK never used imovie.
 
Honestly, the easiest way to do it if you want quality they have, pre record the song. Record guitar first, and get it solid, until youre happy with it. And then record vocals over it. Them mix it, and record video to the recording so you can get different angles. And just take out the sound from the video. Import the song into I movie, and start editing!

But that alone won't guarantee you the same quality as that of the performers you listed. While highly credible results can be achieved in a domestic recording environment, it takes skill, experience and reasonable gear to achieve this. These things do not emerge instantaneously, and like any human activity in which you seek excellence, require training and practice.

Agreed! Tyler Ward definitely went to a professional studio to record songs as he would for an album, paid to get them mixed and mastered. And then also either has some hook ups with some really good video producers, or paid quite a bit to get it done. In the long run he made his money back from subscriptions. But still haha
