Hey y'all, what up.

I just finished mixing a song, and I love the sound of the mix, when listening through my earbuds, there's not as much bass as I would like it...so there's a catch 22, I love the mix, there's a lot of bass in the mix, when I play it in my car its bumpin', but not so much on the ear buds. What shall I do?!

thanks y'all, T

The song is called "For Gwen", you can hear the mix here: http://www.soundcloud.com/abterra

Mix for your earbuds, try different earbuds, or get over it. A good mix though will translate pretty much everywhere. I suspect you still have some mixing to do.

i'm probably just gonna get over it, its not terrible. thanks for the reply man.

i have a few sets of earbuds lying about...most of them pic up zero bass except this set I got with a sony MP3 player....

they came with a little usb stick, sony walkman nwz-s615f, great wee thing even just for the phones

You'd expect less bass on earbuds than monitors, but is the difference more pronounced on your mix than it is on most mixes? If that's the case, I'd look at boosting up some of the lower harmonics in the bass, maybe strengthening the 200-400hz range.

By what you are saying, you love the mix.

Enough said.

F the earbuds!

BLP...NAIL.

You could drop $200 on a nice set of Shure buds, or just get some quality full size phones.
Some of us might check a mix with phones, but seriously get some near fields.

F the earbuds!

hey guys thanks.

They are the apple earbuds, (one of the best on the market IMHO), but I think when I did the final EQ, I bumped the bass up at like 20-100 hz, where you feel it more than you hear it. der's my problem! however, as you said, F the buds. i gots my sennheiser HD Pro 280's

Don't know about the earbuds, but I have an iPhone headset (the only one that fit my Droid at the accessory store that day) and they suck yards of hog.

yeah they're for my ipod for walking around campus, so I don't care.

Play a pro mix through the same ear buds and pay attention to the amount of bass that you hear. Maybe it's less bass than you imagined and therefore your mix isn't too bad by comparison. Maybe the bass is stronger than your mix, in which case you still have work to do.

Thanks man, I will try it when I get a minute. I think It's off by a minute amount...so i'm just gonna leave it the way it is, thanks for all the input and help guys,
Cheers, :drunk:

please ...... get some Etyomics for around $130 or so ...... they'll be a LOT better.
Or just use the 280's since you have them already.

And that's absolutely true for just walking around ..... but your original post was concerning why they don't sound good for your mixes and the reason is they're crap.
Fine for non-critical listening ....... crap for more serious uses.

Jeez. I initially misread this as "NOT one of the best on the market" because that simply made way more sense than the alternative.

On the relatively cheap, I like Skull Candy Smokin' Buds for casual listening. They sound pretty natural, are way more comfortable, and you can grab them for less than $30.

Yeah man thanks, the reason for me thinking about non-critical listening is that when/ if someone puts my music on their ipod/Zune/what have you, they are most likely not going to be critically listening to it, which is why I was trying to make it sound as good as it can through some generic buds. I hope that makes sense at least, in a nutshell, it's not for me, its for everyone else, who don't have 280's or etyomics or anything else.

Cheers! :drunk:

On my system (NS-10m's + subwoofer) the bass sounds like it could be boosted. To my ears, there's not enough sound in the 40 - 80 Hz land, that's where your fundamentals are.

Understanding the harmonic series is crucial. The harmonic series and time are all there are in sound, nuts and bolts wise. You should get so you can hear a truck going by or your dog howl and know what's going on with the harmonic series.

The harmonic series and time - that's all there really is, everything is of that.
