Howdy.

I'm not a guitar player,
I don't live in the states,

I need to buy an amp for general (live) use. Everything from jazz, pop, rock (varying sorts), etcetera. It will be used in a church and for some recording. I'd like one that's worth micing the cab.

What is available is a lot of Laney, some Crate, Line 6 (out of my budget for the twin "Spider" models but I'm gonna check and see what they have in a single speaker deal). Some Marshall, and I hope some Roland (haven't seen it yet but I'm lookin').

Can anybody help me out with some model #'s and /or some ups and downs? Used is not an option here, as anything that anyone wants to get rid of is ALWAYS suspicious!

Thanks

Don't know if it's in your budget but a Line6 AX2 is like a Swiss army knife. I have one and it sounds damn good and is pretty versitile.

I would recommend a used tube amp anyway, any of the old small Fenders or Gibsons.Princeton,champ,Harvard,Deluxe,etc.20 watts or so would be loud enough to do small club gigs yet not too big to crank in a small room for recording.Surely there are electronics repair shops that can restore an old beater?
A second option is j-station or pod, brand new reliable gear that gets a good tone to tape and fairly cheap compared to getting an amp.

Line 6 AX2? I'll check it out.

And yes there are plenty of repair shops, unfortunately the large majority are really crappy ("c" is also the first letter in "criminal"), IF you can find someone trustworthy.

For "sounds" we have a Boss GT3, the deal is getting a reasonably priced amp for use in the med. large sanctuary. It doesn't have to fill the hall 'cause it'll be mic'ed or DO'd through the sound system.

Keep the suggestions comin'!

The Line 6 AX 2 is a good bet...Also the Peavey Classic 30 is a good little gig amp..single 12..you can also hook it up to a cabinet for a little more presents.....Good luck

Thanks for the advice!

Well, I went to Mexico City (about 4 times worse than going to New York!) and the selection was not really in my favor.

The place that had any Line 6's sold out of them just this week, the Laney's did not convince me. I ended up with a little Marshall 2 x 15 watt that had enough versatility in a little box (as far as a non guitarist could tell with the two or three things I can play in a music store and not sound totally like a non-guitarist...what's more, when I was playing on a conga which is something I play well, someone asked me if I played percussion too or just guitar, so I must have faked it pretty good or the guy was being funny or who knows!)to make it the best bet for the money(of the amps in stock in the 10 stores I went into). $250 US even (Prices down here are very INFLATED for gear)

Tech 21 Trademark ten Goes for 250.00 us.

Better sounding than the line 6 stuff but fewer amp models, small size wont take up much room on a small stage, but loud enough to hear yourself and mic up.
