General MIDI?

Yes it has MIDI in and MIDI out, but General MIDI refers to the standardization of the numbering on the included patch sets.

What are you trying to accomplish with each of these units relative to the Yamaha?

My guess is you want to record sequences with the MPC by playing the Yamaha and record the sounds from the sequencer playing back thru the Yamaha on the Akai.

The DGX500 is mostly a MIDI keyboard controller. It doesn't have an audio output other than the included speakers and a headphone output jack. While the sounds are pretty good, it's not set up for recording, only for monitoring a sequence that you will record from a module when the sequence is done. Given the quality of the Akai- I think you'd want to get a synth module for the actual audio recording. Like this:

Thanx for the reply. I'm new to recording. Basicly all I need is a controller right now. I can get the DGX500 new for $300. I looked at the controllers and a good one costs around $150-200. So I figured this would be a good buy...
