General Behringer Rant

People put too much attention on the gear. What is important is what you can do with it. Creativity and talent are slightly more important than the quality of the gear. Sgt. Pepper was recorded on a couple of 4 tracks linked together in a basement.

Right.


...but the 4 track machine used 1" tape. Not exactly a cassette tape.

And there was no cuch thing as shitty equipment back in those days. Everything was perfessional. Sure you could use the wrong mic for your style of vocals, but it was a damn good mic, and a damn good pre, and a damn good compressor, and a damn good mixer, and a fucking awsome tape machine.
 
Well, I use a few pieces of Behringer gear, and by and large, it has all been worth the very small price I paid for it. The VAMP is an essential piece of my stage rig. I use ECM8000 occasionally. I use a bass VAMP Pro for some tracks. I had a little Behringer mixer, but I gave it away to the poor. I've got about $40,000 worth of gear, but there are a few pieces of Behringer gear that do what I want them to. Most project studios that are any good are an unholy combination of cheap gear that works, and a handful of top shelf units.
Am I likely to be running my Avalon through a Behringer board anytime soon? No. But I would walk on to a stage and plug my Epiphone Les Paul into a VAMP-2 into a Fender Passport, and get exactly the sound I need and want.- Richie
 
Good on you. I can't stand Epiphone Les Pauls myself, but I know exactly. what you mean.

I live off cheaply-priced gear. Just got a little Yamaha MG off ebay to convince myself away from buying some real preamps just yet - you need perspective as to the money being spent!!
 
Did anyone notice that in movies, the CIA uses Behringer almost exclusively?

LOL i didnt notice that..but i did notice in drumline that they are using behringer gear in the rack with what looks like a mackie mixer.

i've been hit with that "behringer sucks" routine in here more than anywhere else. its comes to a point where you start feeling like your back in middle school. its like i have to have something or I'm not "cool" and i'm dismissed to the table with all the kids who ride the short bus. for those of us who dont make $100k a year and especially for us who make $10k or less a year, we need to have a reality check on our ideas and plans. if i was to save up for a soundcraft, mackie or yamaha mg (24 or 32 channel boards) i would be saving for more than a year. thats alot of quiet weekends at home, getting your woman to pay for dinners and movies, lessen the alcoholic beverages by 90%, for those of us with cable tv, we would drop the premium channels and digital tier and basically mooch off of friends for about a year. and then even after that i still think i would have to wait for a sale to get some of that stuff. now i can deal with that for a few months, but saving for a year or more is too hard for me. maybe I'm not dedicated enough to own a soundcraft or neve or whatnot that has a ton of busses and meter bridges. but then again...wouldnt it suck if i gave up my everyday lifestyle for a mixing console just stop being interested in recording? at this point in my life, i have enough equipment to put a song together and enjoy it. i dont see me making a multi-platinum cd anytime soon but if i could sell 100 cds of what i recorded then I'd be happy. the last thing i want to hear during the recording process is that what I'm doing is right, but the only reason it sucks is because i bought a behringer board instead of a soundcraft or neve. but hey if thats the case, how about i book the person for an 8 hour studio block for this time next year and instead of the price being 50 bucks and a 6 pack, it'll be $1,500 for the studio block, $55 an hour for my 2 cents and $5 for parking. if you want help loading and unloading then thats going to cost you extra also.

Now I am not going to tell you how to spend your money, but it seems like there is now way in hell you can make make less that 10k a year and still pay for cable TV and premium channels. Unless you are living with your parents that is.

Whats that? $50 a month? x 12 months = $600 a year for TV.

Now that might just be me, but that doesn't seem like a real world figure for someone in the sub 10k margine. :confused:
 
Yo Noisedude- I just have to say I've got a couple of tricked out, upgraded Epis that would change your mind. I bought that Les Paul used. Somebody else had already replaced the saddle and done a killer fret job on it. I added the 57 classic humbuckers, and replaced the pots, the caps, the switch, and the tuners. It's an axe that is hard not to love, if you like Les Pauls at all. Sorry, I don't have the electronics expertise to turn an Ultragain Pro into a real preamp.-Richie

P.S.- BTW Distorted Rumble- The money I've got sunk into my studio is more than a year's salary for me. I don't make 100K a year either. The secret? Marry an accountant, make her your executive producer, and don't have kids. I am happy to say that between record sales, commercial recording, and live gigs, I've made almost half of it back in the first year. With luck, we'll break even someday.-Richie

....ok where i live, this is a quick run down. and i live with 2 other roomates

standard package with no premium channels is $45.60
digital cable version of the standard package is $59.95
start adding premium channels then its $11.95 starting with HBO
$9.95 for each additional one like cinemax, showtime, starz and the movie channel.
$6 bucks for the extra hbo and showtimes channels with digital cable each
$5 for the extra channels of the other premiums
$7.70 for the cable box and remote

and $44.95 for the internet.
add those up and the bill can clear $50 with just the standard package and hbo with no digital cable or internet.

now this can be pulled off with two other roomies but we all need to be avid tv and internet junkies to validate shelling out that much money. my two roomates dont turn on a tv until they want to see a dvd.


believe me, I've made good use of the bunny ears antenna and getting everything that needs to be done online at work. and i do stop by my mom's place to get a meal or two and watch more than 4 channels clearly

between strategic christmas/birthday gift planning which includes contacting aunts and uncles and cousins who remember me when i was knee high to a grasshopper, I've only spent about $400 of my own money. and if you count payments in liquor and beer, i think I'm only about $150 in the red

I had the bunny ears somewhere around here. Don't watch much TV anymore. Just wanted to watch the Dbacks one in a while. But I couldn't even see the baseball because the picture was so bad. Screw that.

I'm with you roommates, my TV is permanetly on VIDEO.

lol excuse me for being a couch potato! when i say i like to watch a little bit of tv, its like 30 minutes becomes an hour and a half and with the lovely advent of the program guide..i can see whats comming on in an hour and 2 days ahead. thats the clencher that keeps me on the couch.

bunny ears are the perfect remedy for that.....

LMAO!! This Les Paul doesn't sound like there's much other than the original body and neck left!! If I could persuade my chubby fingers to love a wide neck I would probably love your monster. Certainly it sounds like a cheaper way of getting a quality Les Paul than getting an unbound Gibson Studio model.

I don't like Les Pauls. I'm an Ibanez & Danelectro man, for the most part, but I also have a Squier Bullet, that I absolutely love, considering I paid only $89 for it. My Ibanez and Danelectros are somewhat finer guitars/basses, but that kind of tells you where my head is at, on guitars. I liked the Epi SG copy, and the Epi Explorer, (I think was the name of it), but I've not yet had the pleasure of scoring my first Epi. However, the Epi Les Paul Jr. looks like a decent knock-around guitar for $99. Maybe I'll find that Epi that makes me open my wallet, some day. I'm somewhat of an impulse buyer, at times, and therefore I try to limit the time I spend at Guitar Center, Best Buy, Circuit City, & the like. I don't make 100K/yr either, but I easily have $20K or more of music and audio gear, which is not hard to accumulate, in >20 years. Tascam and Ebay is where I've spend most my dough, lately. FYI.

10K a year? Were the homeless into home recording? I didn't know that. Wouldn't that be homeless recording, then? Homelessrecording dot com is two doors down, on the right! Or, maybe Welfarerecording, which is three doors down. Dude, you should decrease your alcohol consumption 90%, anyway. For $10K/yr, you don't need premium channels, digital cable, a DVD player, a girlfriend, and an alcohol habit too! Dude, you're really living! For <10K/year, & the lifestyle you're living, eating at Mom's is not a luxury, it's more of a necessity! (Isn't it?) Somehow, Behringer fits into that picture. You gotta have the i'net, though. Just my 2c. YMMV.

well you have to factor in that I'm still a musician doing gigs....gig money pays for gas and rent. aside from that the 10k is the taxable income :) if i dropped my alcohol consumption by 90% for too long then people would think there was something wrong with me lol

You're basically right, in your rant. It's budget gear that fills a niche, sure, but there's a lot of undeniable gear snobbery going on, on boards like this. A lot of the quality factor of the sound of music is the skill of the engineer & player, in the big scheme of things. To think, that there's a whole industry of boutique $2000 preamps and $2000 mics, practically makes my head spin.

People just like what they like, and use what they use, and everyone wants to talk about or promote their favorite thing. Egomania is what most of it is. When people discuss what they own, or what next piece of high end gear that they covet, it's equivalent to a bunch of dudes swingin' their dicks around,... (to borrow a phrase from C7sus).

Me? I have a bunch of gear that most people would consider "budget", and some not-so-budget, higher-end gear too. Nothing too high-end, though. No $2000 preamps or $2000 mics, here. In fact, I don't even own a discrete, standalone preamp, 'cause I think they're a waste. A trendy joke. I have a bunch of full-on mixers, with lots of onboard pre's & stuff, and that's what I prefer. Also, I'm happy with my $89 Squier, and a $2500 PRS would be utterly wasted on me,... and so it goes. However, I do like my somewhat higher-end guitars and basses, too, but nothing approaching the extremes of a PRS, or similarly priced axe. That's just not for me.

I'm with you, on this subject, dude.

You got that right, Noisedude. Somebody went to a lot of trouble to make that neck *perfect*, and set the new saddle to less than a cent. I just made it *sound* like a real Les Paul. It already played better than many of them.
My current project is an Epiphone Casino, which is going to get the same treatment. I played a 1965 Casino last week, in perfect condition. GC is asking $3400 for it.- In their dreams! Mine is already almost as good ($500 new with the hard case) already. I don't know about the pickups, they're actually pretty good. In my experience, the humbuckers on even top of the line Epis suck, and need to be replaced- but these P-90 knockoffs are a lot better. They'll probably get replaced on general principles, but it's not the first priority. That would be the frets, which are a little sharp, and the saddle.
Sorry for hijacking this thread a little, but the point is, not everybody who has some top notch gear is doing the ego thing. Do you have any idea how flat my balls have been busted for playing Epiphones? It's like having a rack full of Behringer gear. I like the Epi necks, and I derive a lot of pleasure from tricking out a second string guitar with a straight neck. So Behringer on, dudes. I know about the stubby finger thing, but mine are short. Reach is an issue, and I want that narrow neck. Epi necks are narrower than a Gibson, and a lot narrower than my telecaster, so I don't know what you mean by a wide neck. The tele is much more forgiving for simple stuff, but the reach is a pain for more complex pieces.
 
Keeping in mind that a "real" Les Paul is made from much finer choice pieces of wood, which is a LARGE part (if not THE largest) of any guitars tone. My 79's pre-law suit Ibanez Les Pauls are the closest thing to a "real" Les Paul I have ever played, and they sound great, but there is just a slight difference in tone that I can never get out of them.
 
i think I'll own a "real" les paul or strat when the need to swing my dick in the wind becomes overwhelming...hasnt happened yet and i dont see it happening anytime soon. epiphones and squires do me just fine
 
Well, Toker, that's the wonderful thing about wood. It's not a uniform substance. And the piece of the rock that Epi Les Paul was made out of is a *great* piece of wood at any price. That's the core of what made that axe worth all those upgrades. The previous owner knew it, and I know it. I'll admit the Casino's wood isn't quite as good as my (long since sold) Gibson, but the tone is remarkeably good. That is one that will take another 25 years or so to show it's true value.-Richie
