Gene Autry type old country tunes for your enjoyment.

Had a classic country trio come out and do some recording. I work with two of the members (long time friends). Anyway the first is Texas Plains, which has some very good yodal in it. Second is Jingle Jangle Jingle. They are wanting that classic Gene Autry vibe and I hope its there. The first tune the singer wanted to use his 40 year old Sears vocal mic. Well it really stinks. So on Jingle Jangle Jingle we switched to a Shure 58. Those vocals sound better. These are rough mixes and, basically a practice session for them. It had been a few weeks since they played and the singer was not feeling well. They are coming back in a few weeks to spend the day recording. I just have never mixed classic country. So let me know if the old,old style recording was acheived. That sort of flat type sound (I guess you would say). They liked the rough mixes, so I guess thats all that matters. Theres a little bit of noise (I can hear it), that appeared during the mp3 conversion. So disregard it (if you can hear it). I did a quick render and it can cause artifacts. listened to jingle jangle jingle....seems a bit heavy in the low end/bass..fuzzing on both my monitors and my headphones...very cool performance on the slide and vocals..that bass seems just a bit to loud and heavy...

Yep. I need to do another "rough mix" of this practice session. My panning is to extreme. Things were mono in those days. I also need to add some room verb. Im gonna eq' the instruments some too. I left things rather flat on the mix posted now. These inputs are what I need. The steel guitar player is self taught and the vocalist, though sick, is dead on, I think on that style vocal. Very cool on the yodal. I cant imagine the practice to do that. Im gonna add some noise too and see if that helps.
 
Way too much bass, rythm guitar too thin, slide OK. I like the sound of the singers voice and i think that lowering the level of the bass will free up some acoustic space for him and the rhythm guitar. Start the mix w/ just bass and acoustic in mono. When the balance is right you will feel the beat without being forced to listen to either instrument. They will be sharing the acoustic space. Then bring up the vocal so that it kinda rests in there. Now bring up the slide guitar and pan so that acoustic guitar is at 10:o'clock and the slide is at 2: o'clock. Leave the bass and the singer in the middle. You may have to retrack the acoustic guitar to get a more rounded , less brittle sound. Use just a little bit of room reverb, just enough to give the impression that the guys are all in the same room. Rule#2 is that if you can hear the reverb, it's too much.lol

Man I love this style of music..reminds me of going to the movies when I was a kid.

Thanks for the info. I'll go for the 10 and 2 panning, and adjust just as you mentioned. Thaught I should hi-pass filter everything too. The acoustic is actually and electric. Its a fender mustang into the clean channel of my jsx amp. They will be using it for the final recordings also. I think it should be acoustic, but they play shows that way and want it. Gonna go out later and remix the rough recordings. Thanks again.

Have you considered a mono mix?
I think they & you will put together a very nice set of tracks.
I don't mind the Sears mic - it's different & gives an old sound to things.
When you set up for the real sessions use both mics & blend them OR set up the Sears as a room mic & get an old time radio session bonus track.

Thanks Ray. The Sears mic I wouldnt mind, but it produced alot of static I had to filter out. I may try to clean it and give it a go again. Hmm, bonus tracks. Should be a fun time.
