I am trying to nail the right mic to get. This is for my home studio and I'd like to have ONE mic at this point which will suite to most applications, but it MUST fit my voice as this is the main application it is going to be used for (recording vocals). Other applications which I will use are going to be acoustic guitars and drum overheads. I am able to get a very good price on the SE mics, but got recommended about the AT-4050 by most of you. I was listening to some recordings made by the Gemini and I feel it sounds really good but also "too" warm to act like an all-purpose mic. Well, what would you go for in that case ?

...if your "price" on SE mics is really that good, do yourself a favor and get both the 2200A and the 5600A (both should cost less than the Gemini)...that will give you a very good solid state LDC (excellent on vocals and cab miking) and a very nice multi-pattern tube mic to cover a wide spectrum of applications...those 2 mics together will be far more versatile than the Gemini...as far as the 4050 goes, very clean high quality multi-pattern mic, but I prefer the 2 mics I mentioned...

Thansk Vybes... So I understand that the 3300 is not in the game as it is more or less the FET version of the tube made 5600 ? If I understand correctly, the 2200 and the 5600 be a good combination of a tube and fet couple of mics ? All that while the 4050 is a more "flat" ot "boring" mic ?

Thanks again.

...I didn't want to say that, but since you have already said it...yeah...

...the 2200A is built around the same circuit design as the venerable MXL V67...a very solid performing solid state LDC...SE added the pass/pad switches that the V67 lacks, and also upgraded the caps with Japanese/Panasonic components...a real nice mic for the price...and if you need to set up for a session quickly, the 2200A won't require the 30 minute "warm up" that the 5600A requires...

...the 3300A adds multi-patterns, but the 5600A will give you those same options with the added "tube" factor...so, in my opinion, you'll have 2 very useable and versatile high quality LDCs to work with...IMHO :D

Wow !! I just listened to the 5600 demo on this page http://www.audiomidi.com/aboutus/reviews/yentis_sez5600a.cfm
and I must say it is really stunning !! Is the other one in comparison an Audiotechnica ? (watch the picture)... sounds 10 times better !!

:) I already want it !

btw, I guess that the Icis is just a 5600 with a fixed cardiode pattern ?
... and I;m dying to hear the Gemini in action, although you are probably right about not being idial as an all-purpose mic (i.e dual tube, fixed pattern)...

are the 3300 and 2200 supposed to sound the same when cardiode is used ? and should I expect the same clarity and presence of the 5600 with those FET equivalents ?.... The 5600 definatley sounds like what I'm after ;)

If the 3300 also sounds better than the 2200, I don't mind adding a few bucks and having that one instead...
