I have been with music for some time and have decided to start recording. My main goal is demo quality, nothing spectacular. I'm looking to record a band track by track seperately if I can since I find it to be the easiest to do without problems. I've tried this on an occasion before but it didn't work as well as I hoped. I'm looking to record drums (one overhead or one overhead and one bass drum will do), 4x12 half stacks (guitar. at least two guitar tracks, not including leads), a singer, and a bass (haven't chosen a method yet). Recording an acoustic guitar would be nice, but not mandatory. I own the following relevant equipment: Cool Edit Pro 2.0, ACID Pro 4.0 (I'd prefer to do the recording and mixing, etc. off of the computer if I can. I'm more of a touch-y feel-y guy, but I wouldn't mind tweaking little things on the computer), SM57 (one), Mic stand w/ boom (one), DOD Studio Bifet Preamp/410 (doesn't seem to be useful here, but I'll mention it anyways. It isn't a mic preamp), a decent set of speakers on my computer (Logitech 5.1 I believe), and a crappy Radioshack mic. I bought Home Recording For Musicians For Dummies which is a great book, but nothing is better than live input. I'm looking into the following equipment (take note I'm rather short on cash (please no one piece over $500 if it can be avoided unless it has a just reason) since I'm still in high school):
Presonus TUBEPre Mic Preamp
Presonus COMP16 Compressor
Presonus EQ3B Equalizer
Boss BR-864 8-track Digital Recorder
MXL 990 Cardiod Condenser Mic w/ Shockmount
Audio-Technica AT8801 Phantom Power
Shure SM58 Mic (and a few SM57's at that)
On-Stage Stands Tripod Mic Stand with Boom
Any advice on these products or on what you think will suit me best would be GREATLY appreciated. Also, do you think recording each track separately is a smart decision? What I did was record the drums (all directly into my soundcard) then when recording my guitar, on-axis 1" from speaker cone, listening to the drums through headphones, the instruments all got off time and I could hear the drums from my headphones on my guitar tracks. Take note this was down in a basement with a thin foam/tile/thing ceiling and a carpet. Should I try another method? Thanks.
EDIT: I'd really like something relatively portable (a reason why I'm thinking of a SIAB). I'd like to experiment recording in different areas and rooms. I'm looking to record heavily distorted guitars with few clean melodies.
