I just got done restoring a Gates Level Devil (ca. 1959) that I found in my studio 'boneyard'. I was wondering if any of you have any tips for using it in creative ways.
The unit is a combination compressor & expander, and sounds amazing when used as an insert on almost anything I run through it - bass, rythm, lead guitars, vocals, drums, whatever; it sweetens them all up pretty nicely.
There are no controls on the unit, you control it primarily by what level you send in.
I've been considering running stems through it for final mixes (such as bass + drums, vocal harmony submixes, or soloing instruments).
Any other comments or ideas?
