How about this:
Use (4) SDC cardioid, such as SP C4 to create a Figure-8 configuration for Blumlein recording.
Two C4 pointing in opposite directions (figure 8), and two more doing the same, but 90-degrees from the first pair. This creates the figure-8 "X" layout, but requires 4 channels. Phase on the rear facing capsules can be inverted as desired.
Why?
First, it provides justification to GAS for another pair of SDC. This provides the owner with (4) fairly matched mics, and makes Decca Tree and other 3+ omni mic techniques possible.
Next, the C4 are a true omni (unlike the B3 pair I wanted), and as such has better bass response. The figure-8 thing can be kludged together by using 4.
Last, (4) similar SDC are available should the need arise for overheads, hat micing, and a goodie table.
