Anyone used any Gains Audio equipment? Are their mic pre amps any good?

It is Gaines Audio (missed out the 'e'). They are a New York based company and there prices seem good. They appear to use very high quality components too?

I haven't used the 2-channel version, but I've had the single channel jobbie for several years. It's a 5532 IC-based pre, with a Jensen input transformer. No frills, not even phantom power.
I hadn't used it in a few years, but recently tried it on electric guitar with my Royer R-121. Really impressive, a different but just as nice flavor as my GR MP1-NV. It also did a very nice job on acoustic guitar with the Royer. Tons of gain - even w/the pad you can't use it on kick drum.
Good luck finding one, I'm from Rochester and I never see 'em.

Gaines is pretty common in the world of 'broadcast', but not all that common in the world of 'recording'... in New York, I'd check out a joint like "Reeves" if I were looking for Gaines stuff.

ok. i had to hold off on this one. i was hoping this would die down cause for the first time in many months a gaines audio pre was on ebay. and i wanted the name to keep a low profile! just closed-- going for $278 for a two channel pre. (i was outbid)
anyway, they are really great pres for the price. i have a single channel one that i got off of ebay for $68 bucks that has a reichenbach input transformer and a three stage op amp gain design behind it.
compared to my earthworks pre, they are nicely moderately colored. say off-white. little smeared on top and a little fuller on bottom (but without the ultra low extension of the earthworks).
they have like 70db of clean quiet gain.
additionally the designer of the pre is a very affable guy, you can write him an email about anything and he'll respond. i have asked him about a few of his products.
anyway, certainly worth the under $300 for the two channels.
