Ok, so here is my first post to the BB...

Hello everyone! I have found ALOT of useful things here...(WHEW! Glad I got THAT outta the way!) ;)

As a musician who is tired of paying $300+ a day for a demo studio, I am about to delve into the world of digital recording at home. I am thinking of using Vegas Pro thru a GadgetLabs 824 sound card on a P3 (haven't bought a system yet...)

Any comments from you guys on this? Everything I have read about the GL824 is EXCELLENT, but maybe someone out there has had problems using Vegas with it etc....

Any input is appreciated.

I use Cakewalk with the 824 and it is excellent. I also have the sp/dif daughtercard and it is also excellent.
 
Fear not, the 824's good stuff. I reckon it's the best part of the signal chain in my system. I've never heard anybody complain about it. And 8 channels...

BTW, although Gadgetlabs include a stripped-down Cool Edit Pro with the Wave 824, the manual includes simple instructions for how to set up Vegas with it.
 
The 424 has an option to do 96khz. The 824 goes up to 48khz. With my hearing I don't think I would be able to tell much of a difference, and I have enough trouble with hard drive space with 48khz. I hear 44khz stuff and it sounds okay to me. Others will disagree.

Let me follow up really quick here:

Is the 824 worth the added expense over the 424? I mean, besides drum tracking, do you think I'll really need the 824 or should I put the other $200 into a good set of monitors etc...?

I am just 2nd-guessing myself on the NEED for 8-channels I guess....

i've never, ever, ever heard someone complain about having to many inputs on a mixer/card or two many tracks on a recorder... if it was my decision, i'd definately go with the 8..
 
Get the 824, you won't regret it. The 424 doesn't have balanced I/O.

And here's another follow-up I guess:

On the GL website, they mention that you can get problems when down-sampling from 98khz to 44.1khz. Not sure they call it "down sampling" but they mentioned a problem when recording in 98khz and reducing that to 44.1khz for CD quality.

Any other feedback on that? I know the 824 only goes to 48khz, but the 424 (as mentioned above) goes to 98khz.

But the 496 does (or will have - when it finally ships).

I just bought the 824, the only reason I have not installed it is that the full-length PCI card would not fit in my crappy case. Bought a new case and will be installing it tonight. Gadget labs apologised when I ordered it that it might take a few extra days to arrive, because of back orders - and then it showed up 2 days later. You gotta love that.

Just my preference but I would MUCH rather have 4 more channels than 96K recording. Of course next moth I am sure the "8-96" will come out...
 
Congratulations on your purchase. Those GL guys have always been super nice to me. As for the 896, maybe it will be great or...?
