I m planning to get some equipment for building a new studio based on pro-tools TDM, so...i m thinking to go for a mac G5, HD1 Digi core sound card and a Digi 192 I/O. These will go up to 15000$. I m wondering if i m making the best choise for that amount of money... I wouldn't like to buy all that and then find out that i wasted my money... does anyone have to offer any advice?? thanx (I ll be using an analogue mixing desk).

well i need to be able to record at least a big drum kit, and have good sound quality

yes, but if that's the most I/O you'll need at one time, you should look for a smaller unit.
If you're set on getting an HD unit, you'll want to get at least an HD2. You'll find yourself running out of chips on the HD1 card quicker than you think.

if you like Pro Tools and don't plan on recording more than 32 instruments at one time (or 48 tracks with the add-on)...you might want to go with the 003. Save the extra money for the Black Lion mod, get kick ass ADAT and S/PDIF converters and run that all together. Then you can get a powerful G5 and run all processing off that. Then you'll even be able to save money for mics, acoustic treatment or even a nice console.

Also, Apogee makes similar priced interfaces for Pro Tools HD that in my opinion sound much better.

I'd go with a Mac Pro. Despite the fact that the CPUs aren't that much faster, the OS performance is a lot faster. Mac OS X is much better optimized for Intel than for PowerPC, as counterintuitive as that may sound.

What dgatwood said...

I see no good reason to spend money on a G5 at this point unless you positively, absolutely need to run something right now which is still not UB compatible.

I have a 2x2.66 Dual Core Xeon Mac Pro with 4Gb of RAM at work and the thing screams!

I personally think you could do a lot better for that money, but i know a lot of people would disagree.
