FX continues ringing

I use Reaper 6.8. I have a brief (lead) guitar track in the middle of a song. This guitar track, prior to and immediately following the recorded part, is blank. There is one FX on the track - it is the Reaper Delay w/sustain. I use the FX sparingly. When this part of the guitar track ends (and is blank from there onwards), the FX keeps on "ringing", even over the blank part of the track.
How can I stop the FX from ringing when there is nothing on this part of the track. There must be a simple way to do this. However, I do not know what to do. Many thanks, Brian

Hi Brian,
Yeah, that's generally how we expect time based effects to work.
Even though the track has ended, or live input has ceased, the delay effect will continue.

You can either automate mute or volume down for the track until the repeats have finished, or automate some property of the delay to make it stop when, and how, you want.

I tried to eliminate the FX ringing in the empty bars by going to Trim/ Trim/Read/Volume pre-fx. I lowered the volume as I do with any track on which I wish to adjust the volume in places. This did not work - the FX ringing continued. However, I then, instead of using Volume pre-fx, I used MUTE. This did work. So thanks for the recommendation. Brian

You turned down the volume before the effect and thought it would change the volume coming out of the effect?!? The actual (post FX) volume envelope would do it.

Seriously is this a thing in Reaper? - I’ve used Logic for years and have not experienced this - unless you are talking about
a Reverb plugin sounding after the initial hit - which called the tail - and is supposed to do this.

Two things: 1. I have definitely made a mistake by using "pre-FX". (Still a novice!) Thanks, I am learning every days ! 2. This was not a tail, but a continuous ringing right to the end of the track. Also, this was the first time I have experienced this. It has not happened with any other FX . Brian

Can you either post a screenshot of the plugin in question or tell us specifically what it is and where all the parameters are set? This probably wouldn’t happen unless you’ve got the feedback way up, but it’s a little tough to say at the moment.

+1 to that.
You should be able to shape your settings so that the delay naturally fades out after X repeats.
I didn't appreciate you were dealing with infinite delay from your original post so I agree - Either there's a software bug to report or your delay plugin settings need tweaked.

There are, however, still cases where someone might want to volume automate or mute to end a delay prematurely
but, under normal circumstances, you shouldn't have to.

If he's using ReaDelay, it's really easy to set it for infinite repeats. Increase the Feedback high enough and it will repeat forever instead of fading away as one would expect.
