Help me to understand a little better...when the midi files loads, it's seems that all the parts are labeled as if they are already assigned to instruments (ie: nylon string guitar, bass, etc) Are these NOT assigned once the files loads? Just because the "label" of the instrument (ie:bass) loads doesn't mean the intrument has ACTUALLY loaded?

A midi file isn't linked to a specific instrument. You allways need to assign the midi file to the instrument of your choice.

I am downloading Jazz Standards from the Real Book (from various internet sites) as midi files and im porting them into Cubasis. I'm not sure what you meant by GM files......

General Midi files are standard files which have given midi numbers (either 001 - 128 or 000 - 127) which match specific instruments and sounds. This way if you use a GM module (such as a synth with a GM sound set) you can set all of the midi outs for each track in your downloaded file to the synth in question and it will play all of the correct instruments.

Keep in mind that general midi sounds like crap. It will usually sound like it is coming from a gameboy imo. :D

What's the sense of general midi anyway?

General midi was designed as a standard so that it is possible to transfer midi files from system to system and it is highly likely that each system has a general midi module (either hardware or software) which can allow that file to be played back with the correct instrumentation.

It does however sound crap.
