Linux Man...
My probelm is bascially when I am listening to MP3s, and a box pops up, like when playing freecell and it tells me I can't make that move, I hit ok, but then the pitch on my mp3 drops for a second or two. It is really really annoying me. The worst part of it is, I just built this new computer and my old one didn't do it. I upped the priority on winamp to 'real time' but still no luck. I am running a PIII 600EB, (Slot 1). 128 SDRAM, SBAWE64 (ISA) (That is the mp3 playback card) and then I have a (PCI) Guillemot ISIS Maxistudio in the PCI slot. I use the soundblaster for mp3 playback becasue it is hooked up to different speakers and I don't have to turn the whole rig on. I used to run a PII300 and only 64 MEgs of ram with all the same hardware and never had this problem. Oh, I did change Mobos when I got the new chips. I have an ASUS PC3-2000. Anyway, I was wondering if maybe my IRQ address for my soundcard was too low, or maybe I can change the interupt or something, but I am not sure. It affects playback, and really is bugging me.

Man, that is a lot of machine just to play Freecell. :D

I've never heard Winamp drop pitch, but I have heard it "skip" on playback when the hard drive gets busy with something else. Since you set it to real-time and the pitch is dropping and it's not cutting out completely I would rule out the hard drive being the problem. Is the sound from the message box trying to play through the same soundcard as you are using to play MP3s? Have you tried turning off the Windows default sounds to see if you still have the same problem? Check the IRQs, but since it's an ISA card I don't see how that could really be a problem. It wouldn't be sharing an IRQ with anything. Most SB ISA cards like to use IRQ5, so if it's set to that then it shouldn't be a problem.

Obviously, I'm just trying to work through the problem my typing whatever comes to mind. Maybe some of this will help you move towards a solution.
