Funky Blues...

I really liked the non-reverbed vocals.
A blues tune really rests on the rhythm section. Both the drums and the bass need to be a bit more upfront.

For me, the blues must maintain a live feel and energy. You definitly have this. I loved the way you mixed the organ. I thought the bass was properly in its place. The only thing that stuck out was the harp. For my ears, it could go down some. Especially when competing with the guitar for fills and I think it steps on the guitars toes a tad on the git solo and at the end. Nice representaion of all the pieces in the song. Vocals sound great.
That dude can thump the skins.
Worthy rendition of a worthy song.

Theron.

Thanx for taking the time to listen and comment, guys. :)

doc,
Karl doesn't need much reverb, or any other effect for that matter.
The man has a killer voice IMHO.
On my speakers, that rhythm section is pumpin' and thumpin' just right. Although, for some reason the songs I've uploaded to NoWhere radio seem to lose some "oomph" as I listen to the playback.
Maybe it's just me... I don't know.

theron,
I really appreciate your compliments on the mix, especially the organ, since that was the track that I really had to work the fader on. :)
As for the harp, the player was pretty dynamic with his volume and we didn't want to lose that "feel". Compression would've killed off some of that feel, in my opinion, and some of the sweetness of the notes.

BTW, these guys did 3 songs, which we edited, mixed, and burned two masters for them.

Total cost: $150 (including their recording time)

This was the first time we ever recorded a full band, so we gave them a good deal.

Thanx again for checking it out, guys... :)

wow, another great song! :)

These are the same guys that did Mustang Sally right?

awesome singer and musicians.

Great mix as well buck! :) you certainly bring out the best in them.

about the harp being loud, I think they're ok... :)
maybe can pan it a little harder to one side so that it won't seem to be "competing " with the guitar.

they did get a deal!

Wow, what a steal for them. Generous job of gettting it done.

Not to be snide but, I was thinking more in the lines of panning for the harp. I don't see coating the track with anything. Maybe some hard panning (on the opposite side of the rythme git?) to give a sence of "stepping aside" while the lead git has a chance to shine.

I think I'm being too subjective on this but, I was compelled to share again.

Major point being, These guys have great stuff to work with and you guys did great working with it!!

You guys are really putting a :) on my face, Thanx!

Damn, I wish I still had this project available, but MAC2 and I had to delete it to make room for other bands and our own stuff.
It would've been nice to try a remix with some of you guys' suggestions.

You're right, Leeking... this is the same band that did Mustang Sally... and they ARE awesome. We had a blast recording them... they're a real nice bunch of guys.

We're pretty cheap at my studio, theron... It's because we've still got our "training wheels" on. :D

you guys don't back up your work?

I always backup my projects in CDs before deleting them in my harddrive.... just in case...... :)

who knows, if one of the bands you recorded make it big one day, those demos are gonna worth something! ;) :D

The blues is so *refreshing* when you come into them sometimes.

Clean as a biscuit and twice as hot, this one. I'm no set of ears, Buck, but I can't hear anything obvious to fault in this one. If I was a customer, I'd be satisfied.

I've got questions about the drums: why'd you pan 'em left a bit? Also, I'm trying to hear how many mics you put on the drums. The snare and cymbals sound like they were miked separately, but I can't pick up the kick.

The band takes after me - they rush the rhythm by the end of the song. :D

Good doing, good doing, good doing too.

Thanx dobro!

Those are some really nice words you're throwing at me and MAC2 for this one, and they're really appreciated. :)

First of all, you get props for picking up on the tempo change.
That was the drummer who got them "off to the races" near the end. They replaced him a few months ago.

As far as mic'ing the drums goes... we used four SM57's and one AKG C3000.

snare/hi-hat
upper toms
floor tom
kick
The C3000 was the lone overhead mic.

The snare was slightly to the left, as we panned the kit so it would sound spacious as he did rolls on the toms.

Good ears, man... wow!

Thanx again! ;)

This stuff RAWKS, Buck! Everything sounds just right on my system; in fact I think I'll use this track as a reference for some of my own blues material. Too bad I can't snitch a few drum samples :D .

Do you have any suggestions for those of us who are drummer-challenged? My canned drums keep sounding canned, no matter what I try. The cymbals give me a special kind of headache. Guess there's no good substitute for a live drummer?

kbn

Buck,

Great work, very clean and balanced. Man those guys can play, you must have been smilling while recording them!

Very first impresion of what might be better, was that the snare sounded a little weak, just sounded like it needed more snap. Since it's pivital to the tune, I thought it should be mentioned.

Very nice going to listen again, right now.

Kenneth - I've been giving this some thought and I think it goes like this: don't hope that canned drums will sound like a drummer. Make your choice - either get a drummer and make it sound like drums, or go for loops and software rhythms and make it sound like loops.

Unless you're CMiller. Some people just know how to get away with things. :D

Ahh, these guys again...
Really great. Not only are they great singers/players, but legendary businessmen ( $150 for 3 tunes... Ouch)

Good name for a group, David - The Legendary Businessmen. The first album could be called 'We're in it for the Money'.

Muchas Gracias, Ken, David, and GT... :)

Yeah, we were smiling, tapping our toes, and bobbing our heads throughout the entire session. These guys truly are a great bunch of players and they all love to joke around.

I have one more tune by these guys that I've been thinking about posting.
It's another old Blues standard, but this one is REAL downhome Blues. It's also over 7 minutes long!

Do you guys think you could stand a slow, 7 minute long Blues tune?

Oh, and to Ken... I hear that lots of guys like to use Fruity Loops for their drum tracks. As for drum machines, you'd have to listen to the stuff by SmartApple on MP3-dot-com. He's the best I've ever heard when it comes to using canned drums. He also posts stuff here on this BBS.
Also Ken, click on the little "website" button at the bottom of my post to go to our MP3 page to hear our own original tunes.
We're VERY diverse, just like your songs!

Thanx again, y'all ;)

Leeking: We do keep copies on cd of the final mix but...yep, we can't play with it anymore:( . Although we're presently workin' on hookin' up a jaz drive so that we can save stuff.

Buck:
"They replaced him a few months ago"
They did?!...and I'm all for puttin' "My Sweet Angel" up! I still love that part @ 07:24!...and the keyboard solo....and the harp...and....oh, heck!...and ALL of it...these guys were GOOD!:D
