'guitar' and 'bass' gear, the guitars were all my custom one-off Williams strat hybrid

the bass is a Carvin LB70, thru a sansamp bass di.

if i recall correctly, i think all the guitars were done thru a POD XT

the sansamp and bass outputs were all run thru a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic pre, and into a ART DPS for conversion, into the roland via SPDIF

the keys were a little Yamaha thing, an all-in-one synth deal, i lost in the great flood!
LOL
looked like this:

i ran it into a marshall amp effect in the pod xt.

drums were a drum machine, a little Zoom123.

bass is kinda overwhelming ..... I like the tunage though ...... I just find everything buried by the bottom end so it's kinda muddy sounding to me.

bass overwhelming..
wow, that's weird. this is the 1st time someone's commented about the bass being too loud....
(that is, comments from other places i've posted it)
i'm curious, what kind of playback system are you listening on?
i've checked this on 3 different systems now, and don't hear any low end issues on them, but none of those systems are high end systems...
i usually check on what i consider the 'lowest common denominator' :)

on my mix monitors (KRK Rokits) it sounds very balanced.
the bass IS the featured instrument, but it shouldn't be 'overwhelming' or muddy.

i'll tell you, low end is ALWAYS the hard part.

thanks for the comments...

dewhitt
hey, i appreciate it when you do comment!
so thanks.
those ultra clean guitar parts were easy using the pod.
i rarely use those kinds of tones, maybe i'll experiment with them more using the boogie on extreme clean settings.

man ..... sorry I didn't see this.
I was just listening on my Boston Acoustics 'puter speakers.
pretty decent 'puter speakers but still just 'puter speakers.
I am pretty used to them though so the bass comment wasn't totally in a vacuum.

If you ever have something you want me to really listen to very closely let me know and I'll burn it to CD and go listen to it on my big system.

thanks bob....

well, it's still a good comment to hear, because as i work at mastering these tunes, i've gotta figure out what will translate to the MOST systems... including little PC speakers...
i'll do some more comparing and focus on the low end as i finish these final mixes.

yeah ... a lot of people listen to their music on that stuff.

These would probably be considered largish 'puter speakers. No sub.

that's just so strange, that pc speakers, with no sub, would be putting out more low end info, than midrange, and on my monitors (KRK) and headphones (akg 240s) and a buddie's studio playback monitors (JBL LSR4326P) the low end playback seems balanced.

i gotta figure this out.....

thanks again!

you know, i've got a set of 'funtopia' sony ear buds, that have extended low end....
even my thin-sounding store-bought cd's sound deep in them...

maybe i should start using them as a final check, if i have low end issues, it should show up there...
i hadn't even thought of that before.......
!!!!!!

Very very cool. I think the bass is fine in terms of processing, just seems a little up in the mix to me. Listening on Event 20/20 in a non-perfect, somewhat acoustically treated room. :)

ELTON
thanks man. i'll try to do a remix this weekend, to see if i can keep the bass energy up front, without overwhelming anywhere......

Dayum!!!

Yeah the bass is prominent, but on my rig, it's driving it, not killing it. I loved it. Just another example of why you're one my idols around here...

There's a little bit of bass boom in my headphones but it seems more from the drum machine than anything else. I like the bass tone .
Lovely track.

Same here, I like it. The other "space cadet" sounds get a little too busy, kinda seems to detract from the musical direction, but I had no problems with the mix.

whitestrat-
thanks for the kind words...

manslick
appreciate the listen.
terje typdal......?
norwegian dude.
i heard of him a few years back....he's more of a jazz guy, right?

rayc
the drum machine has some serious subs going on.
i think i'll go back and remix this one, and put a high pass on the drums at about 35 hz, that should take care of it.
i'll dial in the bass more when i do this as well....

soundchaser-
thanks for listening and commenting.
i'll see about taming the space cadets!

Listened to a few songs linked to this thread and yours sounded really good. I am listening through a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with stock speakers and the mix jumped out with a great stereo sound and a smooth mix. I know it is best to listen back to your stuff through different types of speakers to find a good overall mix and I would have to say you nailed it through my setup.

Didn't sound like the bass was over powering anything on my end in fact all the instruments were clear and didn't walk over one another. Really nice riffs in there too.
