As I mentioned in an earlier post, we are making do without a drummer, and since I am a guitar player, I don't even have a drum kit. Basically, I am not very good at programming beats either. So here is where my bass player and I got creative. Taking to heart what Metalhead28 told me a while back (that you could trigger drums banging on a chair), I dug out my daughter's 3/4 scale, kids drum set out of her closet, where it had been tossed in a box, and mic'd it up.
This thing has like a 16"x14" kick - basically the size of a good floor tom...lol. Anyway, since my bass player CAN play drums, he played a beat while i recorded it on 4 Tracks into cubase. This sounded exactly as crappy as you'd think it would. BUT...then we then routed each channel via KTDrumTrigger to trigger Cubase's LM-4 Drum machine. This sounded pretty damn good. Then my bass player took it home and replaced some of the samples with samples from Drumkit From Hell, and brought me back the drum tracks, which I EQ'd liberally, and riffed over with some basic heavy guitar. WOW. I was impressed at the sound I got.
The results MIGHT suprise you.
Keep in mind this was recorded using a $99 childs drum set, that is probably worth about $25, in the condition it's in now...lol. Anyway, it was a fun experiment, and I learned alot about triggering drums in the process.
