As I mentioned in an earlier post, we are making do without a drummer, and since I am a guitar player, I don't even have a drum kit. Basically, I am not very good at programming beats either. So here is where my bass player and I got creative. Taking to heart what Metalhead28 told me a while back (that you could trigger drums banging on a chair), I dug out my daughter's 3/4 scale, kids drum set out of her closet, where it had been tossed in a box, and mic'd it up.

This thing has like a 16"x14" kick - basically the size of a good floor tom...lol. Anyway, since my bass player CAN play drums, he played a beat while i recorded it on 4 Tracks into cubase. This sounded exactly as crappy as you'd think it would. BUT...then we then routed each channel via KTDrumTrigger to trigger Cubase's LM-4 Drum machine. This sounded pretty damn good. Then my bass player took it home and replaced some of the samples with samples from Drumkit From Hell, and brought me back the drum tracks, which I EQ'd liberally, and riffed over with some basic heavy guitar. WOW. I was impressed at the sound I got.

The results MIGHT suprise you.

Keep in mind this was recorded using a $99 childs drum set, that is probably worth about $25, in the condition it's in now...lol. Anyway, it was a fun experiment, and I learned alot about triggering drums in the process.

Link downloads, but won't play in WMP.

I had the same problem.

But I've also used this drum trigger. I've just finished a song and will post it on it's own thread soon. But since it's in context, I'll link it here.

Check out "I will believe in you". Bottom song (song 4) here:

The kick and snare are programmed; the HH and Ride are me tapping an empty glass with a pencil :) (sorry, I'm no drummer) and using KTDrumTrigger to midi these and trigger Easyrider samples.

The timing and velocity are all original, from the glass. Classic!

It was so much fun I've now gone and built myself some electronic drums: http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?p=1882335#post1882335
But KT trigger certainly does the job. And it's free!

Have fun

Damn guys, was it that uninteresting, or is it still broken?

Sorry, was still broken for me

KT is pretty cool tho, eh? I have now built a trigger to midi box, so won't be using it as much (inspired by the glass triggering experiment). But it will always be useful to trigger off bass, guitar...???

Cools sounds man. I dig the riff. Very chuggy. Nice drums on this. They turned out pretty cool. Nice tune.

Hey cool, so I just get some drum triggers for my D4 and attach them to some cardboard boxes and I got myself an electronic drum set, right?

Dig the growly guitar sound, but drums....good for what you worked with, but you don't want to use those man. To dispell hipocracy, I too use fake drums, a DM Pro kit, so I'm not trying to preach a purist critique, but this is what I hear, taking into account the added sterility we all face with MP3 compression...high hat, too trebly, not enough mid frequency resulting in a thin, transparent sound. Kick, very thin sound, needs more low and mid freq. Snare with a little EQ may be workable. You can get convincing sounds from samples and clips, I just don't think this is an example of that. You can do it, just not with these clips, or at least not without some work. Not a techy, but there has to be other software out there with something a little more in depth. Or maybe the same software but different clips, or maybe it is in the EQ. I'd love to hear a different clip with more low and mid freq added to give them some umph.

Amazing what you can do with a cheapo set of drums and some samples!
Aounds like a bit of work went into this.....

I would like to hear the snare with a bit of the high end taken off (just my .02) It's a sample so not sure how much that can be eq'd.

I think your friend should consider getting a real set of drums to showcase his ability to play drums so well (pretty good meter)! But then you'd have a whole 'nother set of recording challenges (lol).

But back to the original topic - this is a very cool drum sound (guitar playing very nice too)....
