I made this out of scraps I'd culled from various jobs I'd participated in (I'm a carpenter). I'm using (soon's I make another one) 2 AT871-R's for drum OH's, and I'm feeling enthusiastic that they're going to work out well.

It's a ring made of Masonite (tm), an 8" disc of 1/4" Lexan (tm), and some eye-bolts and shock-cord. Now I just have to figure out how to get them mounted to the ceiling!

Scraps are cool.

You could probably make one with a basketball hoop pretty easily, too. :D

The idea of pressure zone mics suffers if you take them away from the surface,
you loose some of the low end at least.

Who knows.. maybe that mic in floating mode would be just the thing for drum overhead... Might give you some addition range for the kick mic, in the mix....

:D My wife said it looks like a "Dream Catcher", I had to agree. I didn't have any feathers.

My space is in the basement of our 200 year old house, and right above me in that space is a room where someone lives. Also I have 2 youngsters who do some stomping around, so as well as insulating the cieling with fiberglass and acoustic tiles between the joists I thought it reasonable to provide some kind of suspension for the mics.

Scheduling will be an issue, but I think we'll be able to work that out easily enough around here. I'm just doing this at a real DIY level, making the most of what I've spent too much money on already! But I simply must do it.

For the OH's, I'm not really after lows as much as cymbal sounds, so the area the mic is on probably isn't that big a deal- and it's not a PZM. I'll mic the snare, and for toms I can use another mic down low if need be. But if they get the toms well enough, fine! And there's EQ. Like I say, I'm on a shoestring here.

Peritus, do you mean this mic would make some room for the kick sound? I'm under the impression this will get more highs than lows to disc., because of the small area the mic is joined to.

I'm ignoring the basketball remark! :D

Good idea! Maybe I'll do a whole line, and call the company "Froot of the Sloom". :p

Yup.. That's what I was thinking.. Having the mic away from a flat surface...

He's got it mounted on a laexan disk, right? That should help quite a bit. But Sloom, I was thinking about this, there is probably no need for a shock mount. You probably could just use a big sheet of lexan and skip the cords to give you even more surface area.
