Give a little more information to start. The more information you tell about your problem the better the chance you'll get an accurate answer.

fucking soundcards

Always fuck the inputs. If you fuck an output they get very cranky :(

That made me laugh outloud, and I'm at WORK!! :)

ok, when i talk into the mic, or play my guitar, its great quality coming outta the speakers. then when its recorded its rather metally sounding and very distorted.

What bit depth are you recording at?

8-bits = totally awful
16-bits = nice
24-bits = sonic heaven

You may want to check your sampling rate too. 44.1kHz is OK for most non-critical recordings. You may want to up this to 48kHz to get a clean recording with plenty of headroom.

More facts, we need more facts. Sound card, recording software, PC specs.

Avance A97 or sumthing like that, came with the computer. I record with Adobe Audition, I have the program nearly mastered. I don't think thats the problem.

Nope, it's the card that's the problem. Is it an AC'97 ? If so, I remember some sort of weird issue with them... can't remember the details though. They are probably the worst possible sound cards for recording though, and you should probably consider upgrading.

Cheers,

Nathan

I was having that problem with mine also however I got mine to work by going into the volume controller. If you click on the speaker icon down in the bottom right hand corner of by the clock this will open the volume controllers. Click on options, then properties to open up the adjust volume for playback or recording. Put the bullet in the recording option and make sure the microphone box is checked. Click okay. Put a checkmark in the select box under the microphone. Now adjust the fader to a level that's acceptable (mine is way down barely turned up) so when you record it won't be breaking up. That's it. Hopefully that works.

Also if anyone knows how to play midi sounds at of the ac97 card please let me know. I can hear audio but I can't play my midi drum tracks. Thanks.
