what do we think the chances are of doing this the "old fashioned" way.

writing new, fresh, different music.
playing it well. singing it well.
being picked up by a decent label.
making a repectable career out of being a singer/songwriter.

I am about to get very frustrated... and need some opinions.

Is it true that having good contacts in the industry can make or break your career?

cheers

Chances are slim....theres only room up there for the very dedicated, talented, patient, hard working, spam and cracker eating few, or the ones lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, or the ones that "know somebody".....

very respectable career in music....career maybe, respectable not by a long shot....

you should be doing this because you love it and you love the feeling of playing 3 hours in front of a drunk crowd and coming home with $20, but at least you got laid....

Dont get frustrated....just get your priorities straight....music is FUN.....

I don't think chances are slim. It's up to you to make things happen though.

There is a very high profit in selling music on CDs and playing shows. People pay a lot for entertainment.

If you're looking for a deal, you're going to need to show labels that you have a fanbase already established, several thousand records sold, and a market for your music.

It isn't rocket science, but it's not easy either. Just be persistent at getting out there and getting new fans.

Aw, cool, maybe you could help me out with something...my dog hasnt been feeling real well, and he isnt as interested in sex as he used to be....i think hes going thru depression.....

Frustrated?

Several THOUSAND records sold? lol..That's not frustrating, it's depressing.

I agree music has got to be fun, and you have to be playing because you love it. But I don't think chances are slim if you really work hard at it and have a dedicated band. It's all about fun, hard work and yes marketing. But really, by the time you have sold several thousand records you should know quite a bit about marketing. These marketing agents are costly and make their living out of your dollars not your talent.

Mr. Hooper:

If an artist can sell a few thousand cd's AND have a huge fanbase, why would that artist even bother signing to a label?

A lot of them don't go with a label. It just depends on what the artist wants. A label can make you HUGE, but most artists on labels aren't making a lot of money. You just have to look at the pros and cons.

On a label I have to sell 500,000 copies to break even
On my own I have to about 40-50% to break even. Save your pennies and make some $$$$. Yea the record label will set you up in a nice hotel. You're gonna pay for it! What happens if you are on a label and your cd flops because they picked to spend money on another band, not yours!
