Frustrated trying to Record Midi

I am trying to record the midi of myself playing the piano. Real simple stuff.

I am using a MAudio 88 key midi out to a MIDIMAN 2x2, into my Triton Rack. The Midiman has USB to the PC.

So when I am recording I set the Midiman to USB and it goes thru the PC. When I am just screwing around not using the PC I switch it to Thru.

I can record multiple tracks, etc.. no problem. But when I record I can never get the sustain to work. I know it's being recorded. Because I can sit and just tap my foot on it. and the Midi In in Cubase registers it. It's just when I play it back, there is never a sustain, and I've tried this in Sibelius, Cubase SX, ACID, and 2 other crappy downloaded apps. Am I missing something somewhere? Any ideas?

On a second note. I am wanting to find a good midi composition app. I liked Sibelius. But it's so flakey. Sometimes, it loses playback. Sometimes, it just switches my sounds to NoisyStabber (INT-A 000)

So in a nutshell.
Can't get Midi Sustain to record at all.
Sibelius 4 flakey... anyone know any better apps?

1. No MIDI sequencer will capture sustain MIDI CC information if you already have it depressed before you hit record. I always start playing two measures in and depress the sustain pedal somewhere in the first measure.

2. Your sequencer may be filtering sustain MIDI CC info - check your MIDI filter settings.
 
Sibelius is a notation program, not primarily a midi sequencer. For composition and midi recording I'd suggest you use a program designed for midi composition, not a notation program.
 
Open up the Key editor in Cubase and switch the controller lane to show Sustain (If you don't see it in the list, right-click on the menu and add it to the list. Check to see if you have the MIDI CC info written there.

I know that Siebelius is for composition. But I am looking for something that performs like that. I am looking for suggestions on which app to use. Telling me a genere doesn't help me. Can anyone actually suggest an application?

Above, I mention that I am using a Triton Rack. For $3k, it definately supports sustain.

I never said that I was doing that. I am saying the app is either not recording the sustain or not playing it back.

#1: IF you actually paid 3k for your Triton rack, you got taken.

#2: Don't disparage people's advice if you're not going to actually list app requirements.

#3. Please list your EXACT chain for PC placyback. It sounds to me like the CC events are getting filtered on the chain back to the Triton. This would NOT be an app issue, it is lUser Error.

I like and use Finale and I don't find it flaky at all. I haven't tried Sibelious, but I have heard it is excellent too. I would NOT use either for midi composition, though. They are notation apps frst and foremost, and even though they support sequencing in a rough sort of way, the tools are rudimentary at best.

I personally find that working in Cubase or Sonar, both of which give me staff views, works very well for me, and I export what I want notated when the time is right.
